Air dam question

Where can I find an air dam? I've hit every salvage yard in a 100 mile radius, and checked every car part site I know of and can't find one. Mine isn't broke completely, but there is about a 4" chunk missing off of it.

Re: Air dam question

Also, another dumb question. I have the all plastic grille inserts, if I swap to those ones with the slots that kinda look like louvers, will those help cool my radiator? I saw those ones on Hawks third gen and on year one.

Lots of people make their own from sheetmetal. I've never had to, so I'm not certain what they use, as far as thicknesses & such.

The opening in the nose offers noting for engine cooling. If you look under the nose, you'll see why.

Re: Air dam question

Thanks. I'll check that website out here in a minute.

It was kinda hard to look under the nose, I have the ground fx kit. I happened to look at a diagram of the front end in my year one catalog and I see what your talking about. The front impact absorber and the front reinforcement bar. Is that what you were talking about?

Not really. On 'birds, 100% of the cooling air comes in from underneath. There is a big plastic "plate" that curves from bottom to top, to act as an "airfoil" To help the air flowing under the car move up through the radiator as well as getting caught by the air dam.

You have to get under the car & look up, behind the fascia, to see what I'm talking about.

Re: Air dam question

I'm not seeing what you were talking about. The only plastic up there was the air dam and the ground fx. That curves upwards. Other than that it was empty space. I felt around and didn't feel anything.

Re: Air dam question

Either it was added in later years (my 87 has one), or it is missing. Probably just added.

It attached to the lowest portion of the nose & curved upwards, attached to the top of the radiator. So any air that goes under the car, it "pulled up" by the airfoil effect, in addition to the air dam catching air & directing it up & through the radiator.

Yep. ALL Camaros & Firebirds got them. I've seen a couple of different designs & if you held one up there & the holes weren't there? Maybe you just had a different design?

Re: Air dam question

From the looks of your pics....your missing the duct work that runs from the grill area to the radiator. Most likely its been taken out. We're actually experimenting with this on the track in our 92 RS. Id say that any grill that offers more air flow is better. The air dam is a must though. We use regular sheet metal and aluminum angle to fab a new air dam. Best of luck.

Re: Air dam question

The whole front fascia is a replacement. Maybe the air duct stuff your talking about wasn't added back in. Maybe that's why my car runs at around 220-240 degrees. I dunno. I like the look of the all plastic grill inserts, but if the louvered ones will help with cooling I will definately swap them.

Re: Air dam question

Anyone have pics of the internal duct work? I've never seen what it looks like other than the air dam. I guess I'll need to fab something up.
