Re: What CFM are the stock fans?

Im swapping the stockers out to chase even cooler temps (blower setup, moving to Florida, and wiring them to the battery and to a switch) and more space in serpentine belt/blower pulleys. Iv bought 1 so far and its a 12" FD S blade (alleged 1600CFM) and a stock fan feels like its blowing more than the new 1.

-The next 1 will be a 14" flat blade rated at 2000CFM .

I have driven mine on plenty of 100*+ days when it had the stock single core radiator, stock single fan and a 190* thermostat. When everything is working correctly and the engine is tuned correctly you can do a decent cooling job with just those.

Taurus fan (91-95 3.8l) is 4500cfm. I just installed one and it is by far the best fan I have ever used. The 14 inch fan would make a good pusher. I had one on a previous set-up and it worked well.

for a stock setup a stock fan will work. when a blower or more performance parts are added it can heat an engine up quicker thus needing a better cooling system.

That is true, yes. However many people have it in their heads that their sbc, boosted or not, needs a cooling system with the capacity to cool a twin turbo big block in a towing vehicle. My post was simply to illustrate a point that you do not need to scour junk yards or pay abhorrently high prices for a cooling system. And although it may be a moot point, in my example the engine I had at the time was a decently cammed 355 daily driven car.

Re: What CFM are the stock fans?

i am aware of all that. a boosted engine will run warm quick with rising intake air temps. had one. beginning of a run 90*. end of the same run 115 to 130*. which equals more heat.

i will agree that a stock cooling system in perfect working order will cool 80% of all engines in the car. most go well overboard in their pursuit of the (believed) cooling system needed.

Re: What CFM are the stock fans?

either 12 or 14 if they are dual fans. if you are looking at junk yards then pull a set of fans off a 1993 to 2002 camaro or firebird.
