Heater Core

Ok, just a shot in the dark for a quick temporary fix. My heater core recently started to leak and push the nasty steam through my vents all at once. My fan switch on the HVAC control is already broken so I am already heat-less. Now im looking at the in and out tubes on the heater core that are poking through the firewall, and theoretically couldn't i disconnect the two hoses from the firewall and connect them together to simulate the coolant loop until I can get the time to replace the heater core? Need a quick reply if possible.

Car is a 92' RS w/ 305 tbi, all stock parts still other than exhaust, 5-spd, t-tops.

Thank you in advance for all of the upcoming, if any, advice. Ive tried searching but all I can find are threads that discuss removal and installation of the heatercore itself.

Re: Heater Core

Works fine, but when you go to the store for fittings remember one hose is 3/4" and one is 5/8".

Re: Heater Core

That's what I had to do to my girlfriends car. Works fine for me. You can find hose connections and clamps at any part store.

Re: Heater Core

Yeah it's called the heater core bypass. Many Fox body guys do this as replaceing the heater core on a fox body is worse than doing an engine swap LOL!

any advice on getting that second hose off? the one closer to driver side? because my heater core just went out too lol. I want to bypass it, but I just can't seem to get that second one to budge.

Re: Heater Core

Now i feel dumb. Ha. I did struggle as well with that little hose where it runs down kind of down towards the wheel. I just twisted and pulled and cussed and pulled. What I ended up doing was running a new hose from where the smaller j looking hose goes into the lower engine bay (the hard one to get off) straight to the valve where the other heater core hose connects. Make sure that the fitment is good and tight. This is of course temporary but working with zero problems.

Re: Heater Core

Well I got my heater core bypassed. would have done it at the valve, but I already managed to get both hoses off, so I figured I'd just finish it up that way. also, wanna thank GM for putting the WORST possible hose clamps on there, in the most inconvenient place possible lol

be advised that you do not want a aluminum heater core replacement when the time comes for you to repair it correctly.they lose too much heat and thusly dont provide very much heat .just have your OE core repaired at any radiator shop and you will be MUCH happier
