I just got a lap top, and I wanna know what all I need so that I can tune my car....read timing, A/F ratio, etc. Something somewhat simple and user friendly.

EASE Diagnostics is Windows based and looks pretty good and user friendly:

And if you go to the AKM cables site you will find many others that aren't free and some that are, like the two up top.

Go to that page and look at scanner diagnostic data. You'll find lots of sites that do lots of different cars. You have a laptop with XP already? Geesh, that's not what you want to use for farting around with this stuff. You want something simple, say PII with a cd-rom and gotta have a floppy and a DB9 serial port. That's all you need, anything else is overkill. You don't want to drop it or have it flying around in the car one day cause you forgot to strap it down while you were testing some power shifting techniques! Let's not even say what someone who thinks they need it worse than you might do if he sees it in the car, too. And don't think it hasn't happened before! That was one of the things I liked about this hobby: that it wasn't made to be high buck, true to the DIY style.

Yea, from what i've read I've got a little more than I need for tuning, but I got the computer for school (college junior) and being able to use it for the car was just a bonus. Thanks for the help

I'm a part time rep for Ease. http://www.obd2.com or http://www.easesim.com Ease offers a scan tool version for Win95, 98, 2000, ME, and NT4.0 SP5. The Ease scan tool built for Win2000 will work with XP. The core is essentailly the same for those two operating systems. Ease also has scan tools available for Palm Pilot and WinCE users.

I have screen captures from use of the scan tool on my own personal vehicle and can create additional screen captures from either the OBD1 or OBD2 versions of the tool. Anyone who decides to buy an Ease scan tool through me will be eligible for a 10% rebate of their purchase price. You can use a credit card and Ease offers a 30 day no-questions-asked money back guarantee.

If anyone has any questions about Ease scan tools not answered at the Company web page feel free to email me directly mike_88z51@yahoo.com.
