Reading codes off of check engine light

I purchased one of the $20 plugs that bridges your ecu and initiates the check engine light diagnostics. Later I found out that this is as simple as bridging port a and b with a paper clip. Anyways, when the plug is attached the check engine light and seat belt light flash in what seams like totally random patterns. I understand the concept but these lights flash in no pattern whatsoever. At least as far as I can tell. I initially assumed that the plug is nonfunctional so I simply used a paper clip with the exact same results. Does anyone have an 82 that could explain this to me? Maybe I could upload a video if it would help.

Re: Reading codes off of check engine light

I'm not sure about a 1982. But all the others flash in a sequence of
flash - pause- flash flash - longer pause. This will be 1 and 2 = 12 and happen three times indicating the test in progress.

Then the codes that are set like 32

flash flash flash - pause- flash flash longer pause. This will be 3 and 2 =32 and happen three times.

All other codes stored will follow and then go back to 12 ending test, then start with 12 again and go through test again...

Get a piece of paper and pencil and just write a | for each flash, you will see the pattern begin.

HTH!

Here is a video I shot maybe somebody could shed some light on this.

I believe I understand the concept but these patterns don't look correct.

helps to have an assistant write down while you call out the flash/pause sequence.

Re: Reading codes off of check engine light

THat doesnt look like its working properly. You should immediatley get a single solid flash, then a pause for no more than a second and then a flash, flash. Indicating a code 12. That will do that pattern 3 times. Then you will get what ever codes are stored. For example, next you would get a flash, then a pause, then flash, flash, flash. That is a code 13 or you could have flash, flash, flash, then a pause, and then flash , flash. That is a code 32. Looks like your light or ecm is not functioning properly. You should be able to find all of the codes within like 30 seconds tops. Tell me, why are you checking for codes in the first place? How is your car acting?

Re: Reading codes off of check engine light

That is not working correctly!

1982 is early, is this EFI or electronic carb? I'm not sure it works back then?

The best thing about the expensive paper clip you got was the book that came with it! Does it say it covers 1982 and codes?

Re: Reading codes off of check engine light

My car doesn't seem to have any problems but when I reach about 50 mph the check engine light comes on. After I drop below about 50 it turns back off. The car is a crossfire injection set up. I'm not sure what the problem is because the code reader supports any OBD I set up. Thanks for the help guys I may just have somebody with a proper code reader check it and see if it works.

Re: Reading codes off of check engine light

This sounds familiar. Jump a-B on ALDL and read the flashes. EGR is MPH related. Inspect EGR.

Re: Reading codes off of check engine light

He said he tried that with code reader and paperclip but it's not flashing correctly?

Sure sounds like code 32 again...
