Thermo Master

Reposted from another board:

Ok so I know every1 hates these chips, even back when I had my 85 trans am I rem evey1 saying they are junk. Still back then I used one and it worked better for me, but that was after I changed too the 165ecm and the car had a 350 and not the 305 that the stock ecm it thought it had. So maybe it just ran better because it was a 350 chip I used.

Anyways now I have a late alum head 86 C4 and still got my new 165 ecm and Thermo Master chip that was for a 87 or 89 trans am/camaro 350, can't rem which yr atm atm. So I want to know what is the diff, between the f-body and c4 chips? I looked it up for both cars and they had diff part numbers. Also read that the Thermo chip just turns the fan on earlier?

Re: Thermo Master

The two most common areas are VATs and fan control. The fan control to the relays is inverted between the Y & F body cars.

Re: Thermo Master

So the fan/vats wouldn't work unless I repin them? IF I used a f-body chip in a y body?

Re: Thermo Master

Type the hypertech pn onto summits search and click application. If it is 89 it will have vats enabled. Rbob is stating the fan switch is opposite between f and y . Iirc 86 vette would be a nc switch and the f body is no. If you install the hypertech as is the fans may turn on and stay on all the time. Depending on what the hypertech looks like I might be able to update it to 89 programing or could even update your 86 memcal. I have a lot of the hypertech files but there are only minor changes mostly wot.

Re: Thermo Master

Must be the 89 chip then it had vats that I had to bypass, I rem the headache to figure out it had vats so it would start. Depends when f-body got vats(I forget), I know y-body got it in 86. The f-body chip I got off c-list for like $40 back then, so it's not a big deal if it don't work. Just wanted to use something I had before I got a chip made and i plan to get an other f-body someday and maybe it'll have tpi.

Thanks for the advice and offer and I'm still in the research and planing stage for this car. I'll prob get a custom chip as I plan to use the car for mild drag race and would benefit from the wot changes. I'd also like to keep the stock chip incase the tune doesn't jive or as a failsafe, because it'll be a work in progress. Got a guy who offered to burn me a chip for $50 and that seems fair. Once I get the parts figured out I'd like to get a mild chip, maybe something that'll leave room for error or to grow. From when I had my f-body, I rem looking into the ecm and figured I'd either have to burn my own to get max or change to aftermarket ecm. And I'm not looking to turn this into a major project atm. I bought this car to slap some parts on quick, have some fun while I work on my other car, that I need a few months to put all the new parts on.

My plan so far is SLP runners I got new for $260, I'll port them the vette base and use my f-body ported plenum. Already got new(unused rebuilt) 24lb bosh III injectors, used adj reg, mod the air intake, 1.6 rockers/springs/7/16 studs, delete cats and run a single 3" into a hooker maxflow, lightwieght weld wheels, shiftkit, I know at least 100lbs I can remove off the bat, igniton uprgades I have that I did to my f-body.

What I've undecided on is the cam, I should change it because I'll be putting a new single true roller timing chain on and oil pump/pan and since I am porting the intake it only make sense Ill be right there. I was thinking summit 1103 is cheap or this isky cam http://www.summitracing.com/parts/is...make/chevrolet
I'll be doing the exhaust myself, using mandrel bends. Also I'm undecided if I want to put longtube headers on or use the stock. On my c3 I used manifold off a c4 and it helped keep the low end torque down too walk the car out. This being a TPI car and having a weak rearend center I'm not sure if that's possible. My c3 was the opposite strong center and weak outers and I was just trying to not break it. LOL I can't even powerbreak the c3 I killed the bottom so much, but I beat a lot of cars that had slicks and did burnouts.

Re: Thermo Master

I would really steer clear of the summit cams. a friend of mine just purchased one and used a lot of zinc additive. The cam went flat real quick and he had to do a rebuild just because he was trying to save a little money.

Re: Thermo Master

Far as I can tell most brands are hit or miss these days. I lost a comp cams after less than 4000 miles. Got a elgin that's doing good so far, but I put redline oil treatment in every change and I change my oil more often on a raced car.

It was on a corvette board and looks like he has been selling them there for the past yr or so and has been a member since 2010. No complaints in his post, but thx for the heads up. I got time to think it over and ask about him.

Re: Thermo Master

I think your right on the cam, break in additive . I just wanted to share a experience. I would hate for someone to save a little cash to have it burn them bad with a tear down .
