Help with my 91 stick shift RS with TPI 5.0

I just took a look at my ECM and noticed its off a 1986 Iroc. I've been having trouble with loopy idle and ive done everything to it with no fix. Was wondering if the 86 IROC even came with a manual transmission? Do I have the wrong ECM?

These are the numbers off the front of the ECM:
16127491 (top left)
ANTS (top right)
86ANTSK100780749 (Barcode)

ANTS is for a '89 - '91 L03 TBI Camaro and Firebird with an automatic & Cali emissions.

It may not be the chip that is actually in the ECM. Need to remove the small cover and get the BCC off of the larger chip to verify.

OK, still early in the morning, that isn't the correct ECM for a TPI set up. Which would have been swapped on as no '91 RS came with TPI.

Re: Help with my 91 stick shift RS with TPI 5.0

So the previous owner just left the original ECM that came with the 91 RS and swapped the TBI for a TPI. Hmmmm... Did the previous owner program the 91 RS ECM chip to work with the TPI set up? Is this even possible?
I'm not sure if the ECM is causing all my issues so how can I find out if the ECM is programmed correctly?
I've got idle going up and down when the engine warms up and it also seems I’m running rich. Other than that no codes are given and the car does start up and run.

Open the small cover on the ECM and check the larger chip. See if it is still the stock chip or if it has been changed out. See the MEMCAL/PROM sticky above for a picture of the stock chip.

It is possible to tune it in better for use of the TPI system. But it will never run great for various reasons.

So it would be best to just buy a new ECM. Which one would be best for this set up? The car is still using the MAP sensor. Would I need a new wire harness and start from scratch?

Depends upon what you want to do. You can add a third connector and re-pin to the '90 - '92 TPI SD ECM ('7730). Re-pin guide at the top of the TPI board (IIRC). The issue here is what engine is under the TPI.

If it is the L03, there won't be a stock calibration for it.

If you plan on modifying the engine the best route would be an EBL Flash ECM with the Port Mod. Note that this is a system that I put together and sell. It will be plug & play with the current ECM and provide a means of tuning nearly any engine combination you build.

This is the Chip!!! Doesn't look like the Memcal.

Being that it is the stock ANTS TBI chip, that isn't going to run all that well. But I think that you know that.

Re: Help with my 91 stick shift RS with TPI 5.0

I really need to think about what to do next. I got myself a LO3 half as$ TPI project that will cost me extra $$$$$ to finish and do properly. Don't really want to spend too much on this hack job. Can we just program the Prom and Calpak to make it more stable as is? How much will that run me? I'm due for smog hear in Cali and I really doubt this thing will pass with the LO3 ECM still on. I might just do a L98 swap down the road.
Thanks for all your input. You’ve definitely been the most helpful.

Ok. You might be right on the money with the EBL. Im fairly new to this kinda stuff and I hope im not in over my head. TPS and IAC have already been extended and injectors have been spliced and connected. So I send out the 8746 out to you...you do your THENG.... I get it back, connect, and problem solved? Or do I need to do some programming on my end?

Re: Help with my 91 stick shift RS with TPI 5.0

You will need to do some tuning. In California during a smog check, do they plug into the ALDL port with a scan tool? If so that could be an issue. If they set it for a TPI car the scan tool won't connect.

If they go by the VIN, then it is a TBI engine and the scan tool will connect, and look stock.

I think they do go by the VIN when they connect with the scan tool. So I should be ok. I'm going to do some more reading on your sight. I want to make sure I fully understand what the heck I'm going to do once I order the EBL flash ECM from your web-page. Do I need to make any further modifications to the engine?
