I recently bought a 89 camaro rs with 305tbi. After driving home and letting the car sit over night I had a real hard time to get it running. Had to slightly apply gas or it just wouldn't start. After warming up the car runs fine. I read the fault codes since i noticed the service engine light was flashing(PO had covered the display so yeah i guess i got scammed a bit...). Obd came up with code 51 and 53 so i measured the alternator voltage, which gave out a stable 14.8V. So it shouldn't be having overvoltage issues which the code 53 implies. After that I took out the ECM and noticed a circuit board where the PROM should be and I am at a miss.
Could someone clarify what that board is supposed to be. Also I am most likely going to swap the ECM just in case so should i look into something to avoid frying the new board. The car has some poor wiring done to it. The cooling fan is operated via switch. The coolant sensor for the fan is hooked up to a wire which connects with a wire coming from the knocking sensor before going inside the car.
Looks like a . Bin file switcher. You might want to post a ad in the wanted section. Any 89-92 1228746 ecm is a direct swap you just need a correct prom.

With that ECM code 53 is VATs. Code 51 is a PROM issue, which could possibly be expected.
Pop the cover and see if that add-on board has been soldered in. If so will need another ECM. If the stock EPROM socket is still there then just get the proper PROM for it.
As the previous owner was likely doing some tuning, the engine may no longer be stock.
Thanks! I will have another look at the ecm. Just one more question. If i were to start looking for a new ecm, could i just swap in a unit from an older model say 88 and avoid the hassle with VATS alltogether? I've already thought about disabling it and this just seems like a perfekt time to do so.
Already ordered a fitting salvage ecm. As for the ecm currently in the car I will eventually try to find out if it is still usable as a tuning platform. Summit racing seems to have tune up PROMs for sale. For example this one here https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hyp-159321
Do these chips need the adapter soldered or can these be installed on a stock ecm board.

you can use the 88 1228063 with appropriate prom and avoid vats.
you can also use a truck ecm 1227747 it’s plug and play.
the truck ecm just doesn’t use the intake air temp sensor. You can always get a custom burned prom to illuminate vats or use a hz modulator.
Put in a new ecm today. No more flashing service engine light. Still has the same problem with poor cold start but once it starts it does run alot smoother. Also no fault codes at all I guess the next thing on my check list is the IAC or fuel pressure

Also popped the cover from the old ecm. The extra board IS soldered on the ecm... I guess i'll hold on to it but won't be putting it on again.
