aftermarket Ecm

I'm looking at purchasing the Holley Efi system kit # 550-601 for the GTA. I bought the moates setup and tried tuning my own and just never got the results I was looking for( More due to my not really understanding all the different Values and files for it) . So I am considering something more user friendly, The Holley system sounds like it works good couple of reviews from some members here. But I look at the Fast system for My GTA and it looks nice also. The FAST is a cheaper price but the reviews I read about it seemed very mixed, some had good luck and some didn't. I'm just looking for something user friendly and easier to program. I don' have a radical setup,I'm just tired of not driving the car because of the way it runs. Any opinions on the different systems . I do have a guy who would tune my stock stuff local but he's 600.00 a tune and he does strap it to the dyno to test it . So let's hear it.

I just installed the same holley kit on my car. My setup is a little wild with a big cam but it went very well and Im happy so far with it even though its expensive.

Did you have to use their distributor? or could you use the factory one?

Re: aftermarket Ecm

the holley hp efi system works great... i have been working on a swap over the past couple years dropping in a ZZ5 with a RAMJET 350 intake. i did a custom harness for the holley starting off their universal harness. in the end once i was ready to fire up, it fired on the first try and basically was running well that first day... their software and WBO2 system do make it very easy to use. you do need to get the set up right and it helps to have some tuning knowledge, but i have to say it is very practical and you should expect to get good results without a lot of hassle

Re: aftermarket Ecm

The Holley hp is a nice setup. Once you remove the wires from the stock ecu. The HP wire harness is long enough to bring the wires through passenger side area to where the stock ecu was mounted and you have room to mount the Holley hp there. I have installed both. Both are fine although I liked the length on the hp vs the fast harness. Both wire up simaler. Both once tuned will be fine. Here is a website of a guy I'm dealing with now. He comes highly recommended from Holleys forums. He does both systems and can tune your ecu in 3 ways. Sending you a tune through email and fine tuning it that way. Live tune through your laptop. And in person. This service is free if you buy a system through him.
Fastmanefi.com He sells both systems and price is comparable to jegs and summit. I'm dealing with him now to convert to cnp on a dominator. Tell him Darren referred you. Hope this helps.

I've been using the Holley for 2 years. Nothing but good things to say. Feel free to hit me up with any questions you might have.

I think the Holley is the way I'm going,I did get info on a new guy to try tuning my chip by datalogging it. I was referred to Scott Hansen to give it a try, price is reasonable . I might give it a shot and if I'm not satisfied with it get the Holley Hp setup just for the convenience of being able to tune it and the self tuning feature.

Lpe 213/219 cam with slp runners and ported base,1 3/4 headers,24lb injectors,1.6 roller rockers,2400 stall, accell 300+ ignition. I installed a wide band before I put the 24 lb injectors on and was seeing around a 15-1 af underfull throttle with the aftermarket chip I had burned from someone who was in the fbody chip market. I changed the injectors (they were originals from 1988) to FIC 24lb Bosch injectors and no change in A/f readings.Installed factory chip and it got fatter on the A/F reading.

Did you try contacting TPIS or Lingenfelter and ask if they still burn chips? Problem with the factory stuff isnt foremost finding a tuner. It's the age of the system and wiring. Think about it. Some of these cars wiring is approaching 30 years old or older. What you have isnt that radical. You could do a Holley or fast install. But it's not a weekend type deal. Alot of wire tracing and figuring out how to get gauges to work and other things to operate.. I pulled out all my dash gauges and put autometer so no issues with that. If you do go aftermarket find a local dealer and if you run into issues or need install or tuning. If you do the swap get a helm manual for your specific year as the diagrams will come in handy. There are a few members that have installed them here so you have that help as well. If you have never done it it will be a learning exp.

Re: aftermarket Ecm

If you used Moates' stuff I'm not surprised you had an unpleasant experience. I had almost all his products in the early 2000s and was very unsatisfied with it's abilities. MegaSquirt 1 was far easier to work with than the Moates Hardware was. Everything I have read about Rbob's products has been positive though. His EBL might be an option for you.

I would talk to Tuned Performance. He is a member here and does chips. Good guy. Your setup isn't radical which makes me think Tuned Performance's mail order process might be able to get it right with a couple datalogs and tune files. Any tuner with a dyno (that knows how to use TunerPro) should be able to tune your engine without trouble in one session. If you don't see yourself continually changing engines or parts combinations I think going to an aftermarket setup would be more headaches and money than it's worth.

Re: aftermarket Ecm

Just a quick update, Got in touch with a new tuner (Scott Hansen) talked to him and he thought he could give me a good running tune for the car. Cost 110 including chip,I gave him the modifications I had and got the chip the other day. Drove the car for the first time this year with it installed and he got it pretty close . I'm going to data log it and send him a copy and have him adjust it based off it. Had more power than the other tuned chip I had . Kept the A/F ratio at about 12-1 under hard throttle cruise was 15.5-16/1 AF which I never had before. It would stay above 15-1 at full throttle before. So I am probably going to get the Holley setup over winter, now to fix the issues from sitting so much. Got home from test drive and the rear drivers caliper was sticking, couldn't touch the wheel it was so hot . So now on to brake issue, lines so old as soon as you went to remove the brake line it broke off .Oh well happy it's running and tune looks better than before. Thanks for the help.

Re: aftermarket Ecm

If you're seriously considering an aftermarket ECM you should look for a Haltech Sport GM

Can be installed on a MAF car in less than 2 hours. Works very well and has incredible adjust-ability and features using CAN bus.

Re: aftermarket Ecm

From reading the description it doesn't have a self learning for start up. The option to plug into the factory computer is nice. Cost is almost at the Holley setup though. Where do you get the base tunes at for start up,do you build them yourself or get a tuner to do it?
