1991 Firebird ECM Bypass
1991 Firebird ECM Bypass
After spending a year trouble-shooting my 1991 Firebird 3.1 V6 I learned the problem came from the ECM and was fixed by disconnecting the MAP sensor, EST connector, and changing the throttle manually. Now I just want to remove the ECM all together, does anyone have a guide to do this?

I'm confused. It's fuel injected and needs an ecm to run. Are you looking to convert to a carburetor?
Re: 1991 Firebird ECM Bypass
Yes, also I read somewhere it was hard to get to the fuel pump so I figured maybe I could put a in-line electric fuel pump and wire it to a toggle switch. I already wired the radiator fan to a toggle switch.

Re: 1991 Firebird ECM Bypass
There's not a lot of options to put a non computer controlled carb on a 3.1. Mid 80's s10 pickups had a non-ccc intake and carb for a 2.8. Scrounging one of those up is probably the most direct way of swapping but I don't know how easily available it would be to find. You could keep the in tank fuel pump if you used an inline pressure regulator to bring it down to 5-6psi.
Honestly it's probably easier and more parts available to fix the injection problem.

Re: 1991 Firebird ECM Bypass
I hope you added a relay when you did the fan hack job. In no way can I suggest converting to carb but you will want an edelbrock 3785 and 3789 and then a regular distributor. That conversion would be significantly more annoying than fixing the fan and fuel pump properly and the loss of HP and MPG will also be a PITA.
Re: 1991 Firebird ECM Bypass
It's considerably easier to fix the problem the right way, than it is to hack together some conglomeration of garbage. If you're not capable of fixing the problem with the original EFI, you probably aren't prepared to switch over to a carb and ever have it run as well as it would if the current EFI system was properly fixed.

Thanks for the concern, I am in the process of switching to carb thanks to all the useful comments and so far it is going good except my speedamator doesn't work now but minor details.

the 3.1l mpfi is a good engine . Might as well fix the issue at hand cheaper more reliable decision. Thread
