FiTech Ultimate TPI standalone?

I've been seeing ads for these lately -- anyone else seen / tried one?

https://www.summitracing.com/search/...tandalone-ecus

Tunable ECU and drop-on wire harness, with 4L60E/4L80E support available. See this stuff all the time for LS, but not SBC. Seems interesting for the price.

Re: FiTech Ultimate TPI standalone?

I also have the 38350 kit sitting in the hallway and waiting for me to get moving. Bought it from Summit and was shipped to me in a week.
I have full emissions stuff on my car and asked Fitech about how the wideband will handle the air pump. The replied vaguely that it _may_ impact the sensor and that they are not allowed to modify cars after 1975. I understand they can't recommend me on how to break laws, Anyway, I will block the egr and have the pump connected to the passenger side (since the air tubes clearly signals something should be hooked up).......until I find a set of dyno dons without air tubes. We have car inspection every 2nd year here in Sweden and I really would like to try with regular dyno don headers, without air pump and diverter valve even in the car. If I fail the test I could re-install the air stuff.
Will get moving when the egr block plate arrives. Will also install the Lingenfelter runners and plenum at the same time. I'm expecting some profanity and cursing.

Is the diverter valve normally open or normally closed when it isn't receiving the signals from the ecm? If it's not actually allowing air to enter the exhaust without being told to, you could just leave it all intact and nobody's the wiser. Otherwise you could also disassemble the pump and disable its ability to pump air.

I haven't installed mine yet as I'm waiting on a friend to finish his swap before the engine it's going on is available. But, I've been learning about the system so here's a few takeaways:
  • The software / laptop setup is optional. It allows you to view more data at the same time, and will graph your datalogs, but doesn't do anything the handheld tuner can't do. I installed it anyway, you do have to disable driver signature enforcement in order to get the drivers to install for your handheld tuner. This is because FiTech doesn't want to pay thousands of bucks to certify their software every time they make a change, it's not a big deal and doesn't compromise your PC. After install, you can reboot and go back to normal signature enforcement and your installed drivers will still work. There is a video for all this, the exact names are slightly different for the TPI setup but it's essentially the same process:
  • The FiTech forums are owned by a third party guy, not affiliated with FiTech. They're fairly dead. The admin guy is knowledgeable but there isn't a lot of info to be reaped there, it's mostly people complaining about basic issues because they fundamentally don't understand fuel injection.
  • FiTech's youtube channel is probably the best source of information for install tips and how to manipulate the system. It seems like their LS system is very similar to the TPI setup (actually, I would wager the TPI system is the LS system with a different harness and tune). This is a great install video:
  • At the end of this four part series, you can watch Jeremy work on dialing in the VE tables using fuel trim data. I found it helpful because it shows you exactly how to work with the system to make changes:

Re: FiTech Ultimate TPI standalone?

@Komet I really dont know what the pump is doing right now. The line going to the (dual) cats was plugged when I bought the car, and the car went through inspection in June -22 with flying colors, with that plugged line. This was before I bought the car and I don't know if the inspection even cares as long as the exhaust gasses stay below their maximum levels. If the air is diverted to cats in closed then it wouldn't be a problem, like you are suggesting. Maybe I'm making a problem of something that isn't? That is usually how I work

Anyways, those videos are great stuff! Wish they would make a one hour 3rd gen installation! I guess most of our old tpi cars have been tinkered with and it would be helpful with a super clear step-by-step video, preferably with that senior dude

Re: FiTech Ultimate TPI standalone?

Started tinkering with it yesterday. Super Ram almost in place (need to cut the wiper motor plastic cover...) but I'm now wondering if I should start with the Fitech main ECM unit and work myself outwards? Otherwise I'd probably have to cut an unnecessary big hole in the firewall (or elsewhere) for the main connector going from the outside and in.

Re: FiTech Ultimate TPI standalone?

Hi Friends:
I have been having issues with my car that I haven't been able to diagnose, I believe it is electronic related engine management. I'm thinking of buying this to fix it or at least try to diagnose it better. would you recommend me to do this? and who is the best vendor for this?

Depends on your engines behavior, imho. The fitech system is not forgiving regarding installation and looking for faults or irratic engine behavior after installation sounds like a needle in a haystack. Who knows if it's lambda, bad injectors, bad fuel pressure or wrong fitech setup ?

I bought from summit.
