Craig Moates Software - ideas - good stuff!
I've been using WinALDL, and I like it. But I've downloaded and messed with Craig's softare in "sample" mode, and I think its a really nice item..
I'm gonna run out to rat shack and build another cable to work with Craig's software, but I thought I'd add some input anyhow.
Craig:
On the 1/4 time pass calcs can you:
1) Add a routine to record RPM and MPH at shift points, based on
a dramatic RPM drop. You could record last highest RPM before
drop as the shift point, and RPM shifted to, and RPM
going through the traps at the end of the track! It would
greatly help us races tweak our shifting, especially with sticks!
This is written in quick basic huh?? Too bad its not in C, I'd love to build it on Linux, and/or send you a patch or two.. I havn't even looked at basic in nearly 10 years.
This program is really nice. Originally I didn't even look at it cuz i heard it was a "DOS" app and figured it was limited and featureless - most recent dos apps are. Not many people know how to use ANSI and curses these days. I'm impressed. Good luck!

Good ideas, easily added. Maybe v853...
As for the C migration, being ignorant in C, I'd love to see it migrated! For portability to other platforms (primarily Palm!) That would be great...

Hey Craig,
Glad you liked my ideas.. I'll take a look at your code this week. Maybe I can port some of the main stuff to C..
You never coded in C huh?? C drives you nuts for the little things, but when stuff gets complex Its nice..
I started making your cable, then realized I forgot the small switching diod. By the time I realized it, rat shack had closed. Guess I'll try it for real tomorrow..
Thanks!

Made cable for Craig's software. Doesn't work though. Weird.
I put the 10k accross A + B and it idles up, in diag mode. But when I connect the data lines the idle shoots back down, and it appears to no longer be in diag mode.
(i've tried connecting, starting, restarting, reconnecting, everything)..
the WinAldl cable sends data, craigs software says its recieving stuff but reports link not up.. Weird weird.
The problem is with WinAldl im trying to find an "idle problem", well if diag mode idles the 165 at 1350, how the hell am I gonna track down the problem!??!?!

The key is that when you 'link' into 8192-baud mode with the 10K in place (assuming you're MAF, right? Must be), the engine then goes back into 'normal' mode so to speak. But you've got to get it to link.
Check the default settings in my program and make sure you have the correct ECM and 'Online Diagnostic Mode' selected. And check out your CMOS COM port enabling. And use Win98 or earlier...

Hi Craig,
I think its the cable. I tried the winAldl cable I made with your software and it _DOES_ recieve data, just not data your software understands.
The cable I made for your software, I connected:
Ground to pin A
+12VDC line to pin E
Data to pin G
My ALDL looks like this:
FEDCBA
G
Here is the diagram of what I made, The only thing I may have goofed was the DIOD 1N148 on the second transister, I pathed it
TO the transister, not away. Was that wrong?
I really, really wanna get your software working.
Does anyone sell the connectors for the ALDL port, so I don't have to just stick wires in there??

A few corrections:
1) There's no +12v at your ALDL port. The one shown is the Lotus variety, that's not yours. You'll need your 'own' +12v (ie. cig lighter or something).
2) Your data line needs to go to pin "M" (the one below A). It might need to go to pin E, but most likely M.
3) That diode needs to go in the right way...
Well, that's about it for now...try some more...
