Dell Laptop issues...

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask, but you guys are basically my last hope.

I have a Dell Latitude CP (P233), and I cannot get it to work with my ALDL adapter. I have determined the adapter is good (works on other laptop and desktop), and I have figured out the situation with the port itself- It will recieve but not transmit. When I attempt to sync my Palm, it will recognize it, but not transfer because it doesn't handshake. If I bring up HyperTerminal, it will recieve a string of data, but if I shunt pin 2 to pin 3 (9pni connector) I get nothing back when I try to send.

Norton System Works and Dell Diagnostics programs both tell me the port is fine, and it passes all the loopback tests.

Also, I have a dock, and the serial port on that behaves the same.

I am thinking this is software/driver related, but I have tried many different settings to no avail (changed COM settings in Bios, screwed with output addresses a little).

Has anyone had a similar problem? Did you ever get it fixed? Does anyone have a serial-PCMCIA adapter card I could try?

HELP if you can at all, I grasping at straws here...

Thanks so much, I already owe alot to you guys, and I want to start contributing, but I am ready to take this thing airborne at this point...

Have you tried disabling the IR port in the BIOS?

Yup, tried that. Even tried disabling the parallel port too...

I'm just screwed, aren't I?

It really sounds as if the serial port may be dorked up.

Just wondering what software you're running. I had the problem of not being able to get Freescan to connect on a Latitude LM, and finally ended up switching to Datamaster and it works fine. Plus, I like Datamaster's interface better, not to mention that it's designed for my car specifically, rather than being sort of bastardized from a Lotus program. Just my opinion, but worth trying.

I haven't even gotten to the software, because the port won't work at all in anything...

Anyone???

Does anyone think a PCMCIA serial port card will help me?

without some scanning software the ECM wont send info. you have to send a handshake pakcet to enable cummunicatios. get some software and try running something like freescan or the moates software. you cant mae a p4 chat without waking up the ecm itself. if yoy think its a port issue what OS are you running i had trouble with win95 and winxp i am runnign either win98 or winME. they both work fine with the dell softwre.

Hi everyone, this is my first post so if I'am doin this wrong, please correct me. Now, for my reply, I have basicaly same computer and HAD same problem. What fixed mine was simply removing my com port in device manager and rebooting computer. I have to do this everytime I want to use my cable.
