Time to pass the sniffer, what's everybody's tricks
I have no EGR (vortec heads) and my air pump is a miss. 3 way cat is going on tomorrow and then it's off to the state inspection. I've had best luck running lots of TF steps and slightly lean. Just lean enough to keep the HC passing. Too lean and I've seen the Nox double. The cooling system is 180 which I feel should be fine. If I fail HC then I'll try heating up the engine with a 210 stat.
Anybody have any suggestions on the timing and/or octane to use? I figure I'll just run 89 with the most timing possible. Or should I keep the timing conservative and let the cat use some of the extra HC to reduce the Nox?

Drive a different car there that you know will pass and when you pull up hand the dude the registration to your car folded with a 20 dollar bill just peaking out.
Not that I would know that this works or anything.

Jon,
i actualy got mine to pass the OR sniffer, but they failed me for noise
we too have to pass nox, to do this, i used the stock timing tables. i disabled PE and Pumpshot, i set the injector BPW to 160, and set it to run in open-loop. i just kept pulling fuel from the VE tables until the HC's dropped below the required level (1.20), when that happened my nox was a bit high. i pulled out 2*of timing, and got it to pass once. i failed noise, and tried again at a diffrent testing facility, where i failed nox by .1
you might try the denatured alcahol trick. i tried it in mine, but the fuel pump died on me, before i could get it to pass (yes i am doing a fuel pump this weekend LOL)

I've got no EGR and no AIR pump on an otherwise stock (even the factory chip...for now) 88 TPI 350. I had to put on a fresh two way cat and back the timing off 4 degrees to pass the sniff test in Fort Bend county Texas.

Fresh oil, PCVs can inhale alot of HC from the crankcase.
Big fresh cat..
Maybe a couple bottles of the emission pass stuff. There used to be some stuff from Bell Labs in FL, that was more then just alky that used to work really well. As a test we tried the BL stuff in a 427 with a tunnel ram with a huge cam, and it JUST missed passing. Thou, that was years ago.

Raise the exhaust hangers up so they can't firmly get the sniffer on. That's what helped me the most
I'm going to try it next time with no cats and see if that was what made me pass so clean. I barely registered on the readouts with the EGR rigged up from the PO and the AIR pump pulley off.

I know it's coming to us one day, but I'm dreading every minute of it for my vehicles, but thinking of all the business we'll get at the shop...... I would really fell bad for the large number of people that would fail at first (then bring their cars to us to fix), but business is business.... I know that the Camaro would freak out even a four gas analyzer right now!

Lol, install a veturi fitting on the exaust that mixes the exaust gasses in with copious ammounts of fresh air and route the exuast in a really confusing way so they cant tell wahts going on.
Eh, I have to do teh sniffer soon, too. All I have on the car now is a 40 series stuck on the end of the y-pipe w/ a down turn. Dont think that will fly too well with the inspectors. Guess its time to take a visit to the junk yard.
