Datalogging tbi ecm
Maybe someone can help me with my friends 93 s-10 4.3 tbi engine. Tonite we tried to datalog with a homemade cable thinking it should work. We hooked everything up but couldnt get the ecm to transmit any data. I even hooked up a voltage meter to see if anything was coming from the serial data wire but nothing. Only thing I can think is maybe the ecm wasnt going into aldl mode. First Im not sure exactly what it takes to get the ecu to transmit data. Maybe someone would have an idea how I could get the ecu to transmit data. I didnt know any good boards to post this so figured maybe someone has some ideas here.

What exactly do I have to do to get the serial wire to send data?

Do you know what ecm (or pcm) is in the vehicle? Its behind the glove box. Im not too familiar with what they used on some of the newer models. Know my 93 had a later model pcm with the cpi injecton. With the older C3's, the ecm transmits all the time so if its a C3, you should be able to get data out of it if the cable is done up right. I think some of the PCMs may be similar.

Im not sure which pcm it is but its definatly a weatherpack version since its in the engine compartment.

Can I get a hint here. I mean arent I suppose to get some kind of voltage from the serial cable if its sending data? Im under the assumtion the ecm isnt sending any data and im not sure how to make it. My cable seems to be fine and the datalogging software recognizes it but says it cant connect to the ecm.

1) you can't see if data is being sent from the cable with a voltmeter.
2) what ECM? if you have access to it, theres no reason why you can't provide this info (unless the sticker is missing!). This is important.
3) what datalogging software?
The lack of replies might be due to the fact that this is a thirdgen message board. Just a thought.

Actually I would have to go back to my friends for it since its his truck. Actually I wasnt even using the right com port on my notebook duh. I realize its the third gen board but the s-10 boards arent exactly full of any useful information.

I looked on Autozone and it could be ANY of the following ECM's.
16141470
16144288
16168625
1228934
16146299
16183298
16184738
We'd really need more information to help you.

Maybe someone knows if it would be possible to hookup a 7730 ecm I have to a battery and try and datalog to my notebook without any sensors. I think its possible but im not sure exactly what pins I would need to hook up from the ecm since I know theres 2 leads that are hot (battery feed and ignition feed). Then theres like 5 grounds on the ecm but am thinking I only need to hookup ecm ground but im not sure.

Until we get the actual ecm number this thread is going to go nowhere.
Like Mangus.... what software are you using? Are you sure the ecm is in the engine compartment?

Ok well update. I was able to rig up an old 165 ecm i had laying around and just connected the power leads and ground leads then ran the serial data to the aldl connector. Then I hooked up the ignition lead and then bridged a 10 k resistor to ground out the diagnostic lead and bingo I was able to log data. So I figure it was the com port that was giving me problems. That was my dumb fault. This weekend I will try and data log my friends ecm again and if I have any problems Ill get the ecm numbers. I have to say thank you for making this site possible because the wealth of knowledge here is truly an amazing thing.
