It still runs, just on its last leg and hobbling like a 3 legged dog!
Blowby is the name of the game here as it pumps oil out the valve covers nearly as fast as it can. Limited to driving under 2400rpm and trying to hobble it along until fresh bullet better.
For those not familiar with me:
350 hotcam, vortec headed, sdpc intake, slp runners(all ported by moi), 1 3/4 slp headered, 30# svo inj., AIR delete, cold air intake, and all the little things.
This combo is driven a bare minmum of 300 miles a week and the car goes everywhere with me as quite a few here can atest, nor am I a granny driver :-).
The scenario:
Hydrolocked the motor a yr ago at very low rpm's. Ever turn a motor by hand back and forth to blow water out of it so u can turn it all the way over? Realy a bad feeling. Or getting bum valve springs and then getting within a mile or two of your house and hearing your engine go ting ting ting? Ever swap 2 sets out of an F body in a car? Not that bad when u do it twice, you get quicker lol
What I found:
Amazingly it appears as if all of my problems stem from the #8 cyl(pass rear). The track rental say we had, my dipstick was literally pushing out of the tube :-) Not really caring and already had engine plans in the pipeline, I did a little fact finding. Detonation has been an ongoing concern. Pulling timing or fuel up or dwn never had much effect.
Pulling plugs from 7 of 8 cyl and finding them in near perfect condition (no electrode wear or heavy deposits and no metal flakes evident, they even had a nice shade of tan/ lite brownish on one side of plug) after roughly 20k miles of driving leads me to believe my tune is of a fairly decent caliber and not serioulsy out of whack even running 87 octane as i do for work. this made me very happy. It doesnt appear that I caused my own mechanical mayhem and a word to the wise of giving it what it wants, but backing off a little when u start pushing the edge.
#8 is a hurting puppy lol. Im still amazed that it does not miss on a regular basis when im driving normally or at idle... Compression is barely home and oil is there in quantity :-)
oh well
latest news:
383 vortec headed stroker should be in with next 3 weeks or so Im hoping. Set up with a whopping 8.7-8.8 compression and built for boost :-) So in the next yr or so , its gonna be whistling. Also looking to swap from tpi to the HSR when available for the vortec heads.
least it appears is wasnt my tuning, further autopsy results when engine is removed and torn down

I didn't know they were going to make it for Vortec heads! Is it supposed to be the same price as the current HSR? Still a bit pricey even at that. Have you considered the Ramjet intake? a few hundred $$$ cheaper than the "Power Pack" kit, and it comes with a distributor, plug wires, and sensors (which you already have, but nice shiny new ones has to be tempting!!!)

ummmm last time i checked the stealthram runs about 600$ or so including piecing together the few things that u need to apapt it to thirdgens.
Lot cheaper than the Ramjet @ $1200 or so. I can also use myexisting TB and the like. Cant do that with a Ramjet.
Looking forward to new engine and new combo to tune and pray this one goes better than last.
Should be alot eaier on me due to experience and a wideband :-)

What was the history behind that shortblock? Stock, crate engine new, rebuilt?
I'm excited for the HSR for vortec heads. I'm at the edge of TBI and with the price of gas and the amount of city driving I could definatly benifit. All that TBI AE and my loose stall TC is killing my city milage. Besides, when that intake comes out I'll get it and be ready for the 7749 ecm and twin turbo's.... yum.

Anyway, who sell the HSR as just the manifold and the fuel rails? I have pretty much everything else, injectors, sonsors, LT1 TB, except for distributor (I don't think my large cap dist will fit.)

Bob His bros, are getting a lil slower nowadays, at 485 he's the youngin of the group.
I had to throw a lock on the hoist of the back of the truck so they couldn't get the boat trailer hooked up. And we certainly don't want a repeat of their last court date.

It's not in the printed catalog from Jegs or Summit, but the bare HSR isn't hard to find if you search by the Holley P/N. (#7540)
Looks like Summit has it for $299 -- I didn't check anywhere else.
http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...h&Ntt=HLY-7540
Fuel rail kits:
HLY 534-185 (w/non-adjustable FPR)
http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...-185&x=15&y=11
HLY 534-186 (w/adjustable FPR)
http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...-186+&x=6&y=10
I've heard of quite a few thirdgenners who bought theirs through Thunder Racing, BTW.
As far as the Ramjet intake, the entire system may be $1200, but a lot of the cost is with the MEFI controller, injectors, TB, and sensors. If you can find a used GenIII TB with the IAC and TPS intact, and already have an ECM, injectors, etc., it looks like all you'd really need is the manifold itself, and perhaps the fuel rails and/or FPR, if you don't want to fab your own. So, I'd expect it's possible to do a RamJet conversion for more like $500, which IMHO makes it a more reasonable option.

The $1200 price is from gmpartsdirect.com which is before their extremely high shipping. It is also in kit form, which is MINUS the MEFI controller and harness. It does come with the dist, plug wires, sensors, TB, Injectors, Fuel rails, etc.... Before I do anything, I'll price it all out, just the things that I NEED.
I have time to ponder this all anyway, unless I quit buying beer......

Long before 9/11 the FBI was investigating Doc, for when he mentioned blowing up a 747 on DIY-EFI.
Luckily Doc was having one of his better days, and still sober when they were here over that. Not to mention reading the tags on the ecms scattered around on the Living Room floor seemed to ease things. Well, other then the little guys all having to show IDs so child protection services wouldn't be called.

Doc was paying attention to some Impeachment hearings one day, and ever seen then hasn't admitted to anything. He just rambles on about what is, is.

was a stockblock rebuilt 350 originally from the car, didnt need a bore so it was honed and reassembled(crank was 10/10) with all the pieces listed above.
Like In said bad batch of valve springs and a hydrolocking seem to be the major contributors to its umtimely demise.
but oh well, 383 going in :-) at 8.8 to 1 compression, would i do something like run boost nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Im still amazed my plugs look so pretty on the cyl t5hat have compression and that driving a saturn daily really bites lol(yes im gonna figure out what it runs on and polay lol)

Good luck on the boosted 383, Jeremy.
I know your pain on the blowby. I just traded the GTA for a '96 Beretta and some cash the other day because the GTA's motor was doing the same thing as yours.
Eh, it was getting too expensive to have two project cars right now. My fuel costs were prety high with that converter too.
Hopefully I'll have my '90 Formula out later this year with an LT1 intake and hopefully next year with an aluminum head. It's a rot-box but that just means that it'll be lighter, right?
