32b to 6E

Hey guys. I was going to convert from 32b to 6E and I want to make sure I have gotten everything straight. I have done a lot of reading and the way I see it is this:

1. Basically burn the 6E bin to the chip. My spark table currently is about 5 degrees less than the ARAP bin which I will use. I do have an auto trans. I should be able to add in my values from the 32b bin onto the chip after I have burned the 6E to the chip. Right or wrong?

2. Also I understand that I need to disable VATS. Correct??
3. Change the fan operation to N/C. Correct???
4. Unplug the C/S injector...Correct??

That should be it from what little i understand of this. Let me know if there is anything else, but the main concern I have is that I have to pretty much reenter the data, ie. MAF tables, PE table, etc, from my old 32b bin manually to the new 6E chip...Is that correct also???

Thanks,
Chris

Hey guys. I was going to convert from 32b to 6E and I want to make sure I have gotten everything straight. I have done a lot of reading and the way I see it is this:
Personally I would Make the ARAP timing Table match the Timing Table of you Original Bin.

2. Also I understand that I need to disable VATS. Correct??
If you don't have VATS original in the car you need to disable it, Dose you key Hava a Little Metal Bump Right Befor the part that goes on the Ring like this
if so you do not need to disable it. If you Key doesn't have this You need to disable it.

3. Change the fan operation to N/C. Correct???
Not sure Since I took fan control away FROM ECM on my Car.

4. Unplug the C/S injector...Correct??
Correct

I should have stated earlier. this is an '87 350 tpi auto trans and no VATS running a 165 ECM.

Yup, disable vats (uncheck the vats flag in your $6E bin using tunerpro).

regarding fan N/O... thats easy enough to check. If the fan comes on when you start the car, you need to flip that bit. ;-)

The problem I am having is that I can't get any data since upgrading to 6E. I am using the 6Ev011.ecu and ARAP 6E bin and tunerproRT. When I start the car it won't idle and is very rough. I pulled a plug and it's running really rich. I had the injector constant set to 38 because that's what it was in the 32b bin. I moved it down to 22.3 now with very little difference. It seems as though it's not seeing the MAF sensor????

Is there anyway that I find out what boxes need to be checked in the tunerpro airflow mode word tables 1-4. All the other values in each table I have gone through coincide to many of the other 6E bins I have looked at. It just seems there is something major not selected properly. Just looking at the 32b in winbin the VATS diag. table has like 5 boxes checked and there is no description of those bits. In the ARAP 6E bin I am using there is nothing close to that in those airflow mode tables 1-4. It seems as though something is missing or not checked off.

Thanks.

Sounds like you're running in limp home, in which case you won't be getting ALDL data.

You should figure out why this is happening. Perhaps an invalid bin or checksum?

That sounds accurate to me. I used the ARAP 6E bin from the GM site and altered the MAF tables to resemble my old 32b bin.

Is there a way to check if the bin in invalid or the checksum is no good?? It recalc's the checksum after every change.

That's why I asked before about the airflow mode word tables #1-4 and which boxes should be checked. I don't feel real comfortable with the settings in those......

Try burning the straight, unmodified ARAP bin to your chip.

Also, what chip are you burning to (29C256) and where are you burning the bin onto the chip?

I'm using the 29c256 chip and am using the same device start and end and buffer start and end as I was with the 32b bin.

I will try the straight bin right now...

You should be burning the bin to $4000-$7FFF.

No luck. It fired once and quit and would not restart with the original ARAP 6E bin....

Hang on. I burned it with VATS enabled. Let me give it one more shot...

Heh... I suppose that makes sense since the original has VATS enabled.

Hmmm.

When you have your modified (VATS less and CSI-less) ARAP bin, when you start your car, does it throw any codes? Is the SES light on? If you're in LHM, it should be pretty obvious. Also, if you have an invalid bin (Checksum or otherwise), the fans should spin up when the key is on (engine off).

Are you experiencing any of these symptoms?

Long story short, the car should run adequately (though not perfect) on a stock 6E bin. What you describe is not what I would call "adequately running".

With VATS off this time and a stock ARAP bin, it fired and ran it needed 'cleaned' out and ran not too bad. Still pig rich though but idle quality better now.

Before, I think it was in limp home mode, however the fans were not running but it did through an SES code. Now I am going to try and hook up the laptop and see if we have some data....

should be alright from here on out, but I still would like to see some tunerpro airflow mode word tables from others to see if I'm set up o.k. Reminder, '87, 165ecm, 350 tpi ,auto, maf car...

Thanks for the help and we'll see in about half hour if we have some data...

Chris

You shouldn't have to touch anything in the flags beyond VATS and, maybe, Fan N/O.

I am still not seeing any data to the tunerproRT program.?? On the bottom left it shows NOT EMULATING/ CONNECTED V0.00.

If I push connect to ecm, it shows connecting for a couple seconds then returns back to not connected...I have checked and have the correct port selected for my laptop, max232, what about the sample rate?? I have tried 10 and 11Hz.

Once over, this is with the 10k in place and the car runs now so the bin evidently is o.k.

any thoughts......

PS..do you know if by lower the lbs.hr constant for the injectors if it increases fuel flow like in the winbin program?? Just curious.

modifying the values in a bin is editor-neutral. changing the injector constant in one editor has the same effect as changing the constant in another editor.

You shouldn't be seeing "connected" in the hardware portion.

Try this:

Disconnect your cable. Open tunerpro. After the program opens, reconnect your cable and attempt to connect to the car. You may have to attemp the connection a few times.

I tried what you suggested about 12 times with no luck. It says connecting and then not connected. If I go into the definition file and check off 160 baud and then hit connect, it connects and shows monitoring, but there is still not data...

Yeah, stay away from 160 baud. Checking this box is out of your realm at the moment.

Can you connect with Moates's software? www.moates.net

Cool. If you're running Anything newer than Win98, make sure you boot to dos mode (make a bootable DOS diskette and throw ECM852 on the disc also... then at the command prompt after booting to the diskette, launch ECM852).

If running Win98, you can run ECM852 from within windows.

I'm running Win2000 and tried running Craig's program from the file in which I had it loaded with no luck. I did alter the defaults in his to reflect diagnostic ecm mode and selected the 165 ecm...

My windaldl program still works though with good data collections.

any other idear's....

If winALDL is showing data, then you're indeed running correctly.

The only thing I can think of is that you don't ahve the 10k (either insufficent or too much resistance, or in the wrong place). You might not be giving the connection enough attempts.

I should assure you, I run $6E and have no issues with logging (as do many others I know using TunerPro), so its got to be something straight foward.

Can you point me in the direction of the RS232 cable schematic. the cable I am using is an older one that I made up and I think I made it off the schematic where I got the winaldl downloaded from...

If you can send me the schematic of yours or another 232 cable please do...

thanks,
Chris

There is no way that I am going to be able to build that cable. Is there no easier way.

this is what I am using now..

Yup, that explains it. That won't work. You need to use at least a 2 transistor interface.

Do a search on "2 transistor".

LOL...Is there any way of altering this cable to include the 2 transistors?? AFter doing a search, I found one that shows the two transistor cable, however it has a Lotus Esprit diagnostic connector...Is there any shown with the GM adapter?

Ok Just build the cable and just connect the Wires where you need them: ALDA pin A=Grnd Pin B=pwr Pin E or F is Data (depends on your aplication) IIRC
