Has anyone used this USB adapter???
has anyone used this adapter or one like it before with any success? I am asking because I just got a new laptop and it only has USB ports. I need the 9 pin adapter for my ALDL cable and I need the 25 pin adapter for my chip programer. This one seemed like a good one to use because it has both. Whats your guys' opinion?

Do you use it for your programmer as well?

I've tried 3 belkin adaptors with my serial hardware and none of them have worked (even when the port is recognized by windows). The RadioShack adaptor is the only thing that's worked for me with all my datalog/programming hardware.
I just think it's funny that they sell the adaptor with the drivers on the floppy disk. 98% of laptops missing serial ports are also lacking in the floppy drive department!

It's worth a shot if it's half the price.
I meant the radioshack one. Thanks for your help. I think that I am just going to get the radioshack one and be done with it. If I buy the one for half the price I might end up still paying for the radioshack one in the end. I might as well just do it and get it over with.

The shack link looks like mine. I bought mine in person at the store because they said if it didnt work I could return it within 30 days or something. I figured I couldnt lose- and it turned out it works fine- except for teying to connect to Tunerpro Rt's ALDL function and to datamaster. It wont work. It works great on WinALDL though. I agree with mangus- I dont know what your gonna do about the 25 pin for your burner. You really dont have a parallel port?

TunerPro RT will soon happily support USB->Serial converters when using 160 baud (it doesn't currently, however it should work with 8192 baud just fine currently).

To clarify, I use the romulator which is serial. My laptop still has a parallel port.
edit- I also have a pegasus port replicator that is USB 2.0 which has a parallel port and serial, both work.

Thanks for clearifing. It looks like I might be screwed. I think I am either going to buy the burn 1 from Craig or just burn chips at home on my desktop. Thanks guys for all your input.

Most of the USB-serial converters have trouble with the 8192 baud rate for ALDL datalogging. However, they mostly all work with the 2400/4800 required for WinALDL 160 baud. Also, they should mostly all work for 115.2k baud such as needed for serial emulators.
Like was mentioned, there's no good USB-> parallel converter out there. It's just not feasible for what is typically done with the parallel port. There's stuff out there, but as soon as you read the fine print, you see "Only works with printers" and that's pretty much the case.

Guys,
Hope I'm not resurrecting a worn thread. I have been trying to get my ZT-2 scanning done on my WinXP SP2 machine. I have been trying the RS USB-Serial adapter cable. This is the cable some of you like SBNova have been using for the ZT app. I have been able to load the driver for the cable and I can see it in the Device Manager drop down along with the port assigneed. Now for what I don't understand. If I boot up the laptop with the cable plugged in, it'll show up. If the laptop is booted up, then I plug the cable in, Windows wants to install driver although its already been installed. When I do this, the port previously assigned is "in use" and it will assign a new port. Unless I uninstall the driver, the ports remain assigned even though the cable is disconnected from the laptop. Anyway, thanks for your help and Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.
