boost on v6 730

i'm trying to figure out the easiest way of modifying the ecm to run boost. so far, what i've come up with would be to switch over to the $58 code from the syclones/typhoons. is that my best option? also, i know that requires a few pin changes...what about on the V6 730, are there more pins/different pins that have to be changed?? any help on this would greatly appreciated!

Yep. Working on this one myself, Alan

The V8 730 has different pinouts than the V6. You will have to go from V6 pinouts to '749 pinouts. (aka, ignore the V8 730-749 swap. Search for Techsmurf's post in the V6 forum about the 302-730/749 swap. I don't know if he ever finished it, but I damn sure plan to )

My question though (to help in this) is simple - in the repinning process, is it only certain pins, or are you basically repinning the '730 to BE a '749 ecu?

P.S. - the quickest for you, will be a walbro 255 + FMU for boost.

Chooice depends upon requirements. If emissions controls are required then $8F is the best chioce. Otherwise, being in Florida, $58 can also be a choice. With $58 being better documented and simpler.

yeah, emissions controls aren't needed. i figured the sy/ty setup would be a common one as far as datalogging and tuning software goes. i was reading about the $58 being able to control the wastgate actuator too...that is awesome. i assume that means that i wouldn't need a stand alone boost controller?

Just certain pins, a handful. Many inputs/outputs have dedicated hardware so they can only go to set pins.

That is the way I understand it. The $58 will also handle boost SA functions. Figure GM used this code on many different boosted vehicles and didn't have any otrher sort of controls. And they also had a warrenty.

It depends.
If you incorporate the GM type (or equivilent) wastegate solenoid, wastegate actuator, restrictor office, etc., and what to calibrate it all to *act right*. There are some realitively cheap boost controllers that the GN guys use, that for ~$50 work well.

Offhand.... will the ECU throw a code for the wastegate solenoid... if it is not used? I would prefer to keep my electronic boost controller, and not use the ECU's 'wastegate solenoid'

I gotta hit the boneyard still....

i thought it would be kind of cool if the factory computer could control the WG but if its gotta have "all the right parts", i might just do a stand alone electronic controller.

You can, or you might consider this. Lots of Buick guys running them.

I looked into the Syclone wastegate setup and "all the right parts" is just a vacuum solenoid much like the EGR control solenoid. I still have a ways to go, but I planned on using one to control boost. It all depends on how adjustable the ECM tables are.
I don't see how the ECM would know if the wastegate solenoid is present. Maybe they detect it missing if over-boost occurs. Anything is possible I guess. Do a scan through one of the hacks and it should show how the code is set if there is such a code.

What about using the code from a turbo Grand Prix??? Pretty sure they use the normal V6 730 computer.

That would be the 8F code, previously mentioned.
