PROMINATOR

Hi guys,

I'm new to the board but am VERY interested in a Prominator. Are they still made?

I have heard nothing from speedtronics.net. Does anyone have a contact e-mail or phone number I could use?

thanks a lot,

Quickstop

First off the Prominator is a GREAT investment! And as far as I know of, they are still making them. There should be an email address on thier website, and I know that there is a responce from there too.

The guys who run Speedtronics do so as a part time thing, so it may take a few days for them to get back to you.

If you haven't heard from them in another day or so let me know.

Prominator

Thanks man. I was thinking of building one myself but I haven't got the time and it has been a while since I did that stuff!

I e-mailed a week ago and still haven't heard anything.

I have a 1992 GMC Typhoon with the 1227749 chip in and am really interested in getting the Prominator into my vehicle. It would make life a dream. I have advertised this on the SyTy.net forums as well and I think people would be interested if ican get it to work!

I e-mailed again tonight and hope to to hear something reall soon, but will PM you if I get no joy!

thanks again,

There's no *getting it to work*, I've used it with a 749. It's just a matter of plugging in pieces.

I agree with Grumpy. You just put it in, plug it in to your laptop and start downloading. Shoot you can even get the software from thier website.

Argggg I HATE it when that happens! I WAS having some email issues recently...all is good now. For future reference there is a contact form on SPEEDTRONICS, that has always worked to my knowledge. Or anyone feel free to email me directly at bill@speedtronics.net (or the misterbill.homeip.net address).

Ditto on excitement here too. Got a message from Bill today that he received my payment and will be shipping mine at the end of the week. I'lll lookinf forward to it. Have been reading every forum thread on can find on related issues as well. The search button actually works. There are several stickies at the beginning of this section that are golden in content. Thanks to all who forged the frontier in head of us newbies.

stupid questions...

OK,

I have my 1227749 in front of me, as well as my PROMinator.

How do I connect them up? Which way round does the thing go on?

I am guessing that the MEMCAL goes onto the side of the PROMinator?

i didn't get any instructions as I bought this off someone on the site.

As the 1227749 is a P4 layout (I believe), do I need to cut the casing to accommodate the MEMCAL / PROMinator combo?

Does anyone have a picture of it all setup?

Thanks guys

you do need to cut a couple of slots for the 2 cable connectors. you cut the slots into the factory aluminum chip cover plate (held on with two screws). But, you have to remove the whole top of the ECM case in order to plug in the Prominator/MEMCAL combo, there's about 8 small sheet-metal screws holding that on, 4 on the top, 2 on each side (not counting the two screws that secure the chip cover plate). a 5/16" nut driver comes in real handy. Mine's is the 1227730 ECM.

I used a small drill bit (about 3/16") to drill a few adjacent holes in the chip cover plate, close enough so that I could then get the jig saw blade through to make the slots. do your measuring real carefully to determine where in the chip cover you need to cut your connector access holes.

I had bought a spare used ECM off of eBay for $10 just in case I screwed it up (insurance).

while eye-balling the Prominator, you notice that it's really high-tech delicate electronics, not something you want to be putting your fingerprints onto those hair-width semiconductor chip leads. it is indeed impressive technology.

Thanks RPOL,

OK next question.

Can I use the PROMinator to burn code onto the chips, or is it just mapping and stuff? I am very close to installing it and want to make sure if I need to get stuff out regularly then it is easy to do so.

I bought the spare ECM just in case I get it a bit wrong!

Thanks in advance,

Mark

the Prominator replaces your chip. it doesn't burn code into your chip. you have to remove your chip in order to install the prominator. the prominator "emulates" your chip. i.e. to the GM ECM, it pretends to be the chip, and fools the computer into working as if it had a chip in it, except the pseudu emulated chip can be reconfigured, on the fly, so you can try out your own concocted configurations.

To be clear, the standard Promintor does not have tuning "on the fly". The engine must be shut down while uploading changes. Only the "Pro" version has realtime editing.

Fortuntately, I have the PRo version (so I believe!) Besides, I thought you could still do it on the normal version, but it would just go into limp home mode and then work ok.

I guess then that I need to load the PROMinator with a .bin before putting it in the truck? How do I do that?

If it was me, I wouldn't want that to happen! (But then that's just me.)

FWIW, I have the BASIC version, and I can smoothly switch between bins while the car is idling or going down the road. I use a different PROM ID for each bin so I can see what bin is being used when looking at datalogs.

You load bins in the prominator AFTER you've installed it in the vehicle (at least that's what I did).

Knowing the details of how the thing works, that's incredibly hard to believe. Either you aren't noticing it going into LHM, or you have a pro version.

i dont have a tuning "buddy" in car with me so i never attempted changing bins on the fly. however i have the "8" bin switcher so i guess i could load several differing .bins into PRO PROMINATOR and click-click-click. might be helpful in testing a specific parameter like AE over a test course? that is what i may do this week. my AE routines seem to need some work following my conversion to EBL.
