Will a 1987 TPI prom work in a 1988 computer??

I am switching to TPI and I have a complete wiring harness and computer from a 1988 350 TPI. My car is a 305 5-speed and what I would like to know is were there any differences in the computer system from 87-88 and will a 87 5-speed TPI prom work in a 88 auto 350 computer. Thanks

Dave

From the name of the formum, I *expect* that you'll be doing your own ships in which case using the 89 code / memcal, would be where to start. Buy the right memcal (calibration piece) from the dealer for the closest place to start.
You might ask here for that praticulars on doing that,

I am not burning my own, but this forum seems like the best place to ask the question. This is a stock prom from a 1987 TPI 305 5-speed, and the computer is from a 1988 350 auto. I would like to know if the chip from the 87 will work in the 88 computer or if I will need a 1988 chip, or if I will need a whole new computer and chip.

Thanks

You can use your 87 TPI memcal in the 88 TPI ecm. 86-89 Fbody TPI all use the same 1227165 ecm.

Brent, First off thanks for the link to that page, that was really nice to see.

I am looking at my new computer and the
ECM# 1226870, could you please tell me what this computer is from. I thought it was from a 1988 TA 350, but my number is different than the one you gave. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Dave

Nope, won't work. Even using a manual-tranny chip in an auto-tranny car isn't a good idea. Trust me, I tried it by accident already. Grumpy's suggestion of using a stock chip for that application is the best way to go if you're not burning your own chips.

The 85 ecm will work with some harness modification but its just not worth it at all. The 85 has a maf burn off module(expensive) and the 86-89 have burn off relays.
I would suggest goto the junkyard and get the 165 ecm shouldnt be more than $50

The 85 ecm just isnt worth it. not good for and kind of scan data.
