Computer location and settings?
Okay, so I am going to get the flash EBL over spring break http://www.dynamicefi.com/
And I want to know, where is the computer? Because im going to need to send it in so he can modify it and send it back to me.
Also, when I get it, what settings should I change to get a little more power? My car is stock except for k&n xstream top [dual snorkel on the way!] and Hooker headers and exhaust [in my signature]

Re: Computer location and settings?
Your computer is located on the passengers side under the dash. You could burn your own computer chips instead of sending it in...Trust me do it yourself..not hard to do....Here is the web site and all that you will need ..I have the APU1 Autoprom ..works very well

Re: Computer location and settings?
Thanks for the reply. But i was told that the EBL was among the best, as it allows me to plug my computer directly into the computer and do 0-60, 1/4mile and all that stuff, along with tuning the computer without burning chips constantly.

Re: Computer location and settings?
I hate to comment on this, but after doing UV EPROM and flash chips first, Romulator with EPROM programmer second and finally arriving at EBL I would not consider in circuit emulators or other off line tools per se. EBL allows (spoils) me real time engine monitoring and instant bin switching (FLASH version). With lappy and heads up display real time engine operating parameters can be readily observed. VE learns allow to dial in fueling during a routine drive and near instant upload of a modified bin file. TP can be used to modify other operating parameters. Try to do that through 160 baud ALDL I/O???
Now, EBL flash (which I have) is very useful for heavily modified engines. In your case, unless you are lunching into a serious engine modification program that substantially changes volumetric efficiency of the engine, performance gains maybe limited. By combining free flowing exhaust, with better cam, performance heads and EBL can result in solid engine performance.

Thanks for the reply!
But I already got a pretty good exhaust, and plan on adding Vortec heads and an LT1 or LT4 camshaft! So I guess the EBL flash is perfect for me.
I just want to know what settings or what I should change as soon as I get it in. Right now I basically just got a full exhaust.

Tim
read the following thread
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/diy-...uning-ebl.html
that should give you some insight.
IMHO, the starting point will be VE tables. This is done by enabling VE learn and going for several test drives (got to have a lappy performing data acquisition). Get a copy of TP to manually edit tables or smooth values. Since you have free flowing exhaust VE will be different from original factory stored values. EBL is supplied with a good fuel mapping (I forget which one it is, LG4???). Also, ask Rbob which bin is appropriate starting point for your configuration. After about 10 to 12 test drives under varying driving conditions your BLM's will be 128 +/-3 counts. Make sure that you have good fuel delivery and spark. Thereafter, SA table modification can be attempted - provided that you keep KS counts reasonable. More test drives to follow. More VE learns after SA have been adjusted.
Eventually you'll arrive to near optimum fuel-spark tables for your car. After that AE, PE and WOT optimization can be performed only if you have WBO available - NBO sensors can not provide accurate values once AFR has diverged away from stoichiometric (14.7:1 for gas) value.
That's it in a nutshell.

NBO - Narrow Band Oxygen Sensor (also known as O2 sensor) your car is equipped with it from factory. Provides 0 to 1.1 Volt output used by ECM over a vary narrow range of AFRs around 14.7:1
WBO Wide Band Oxygen sensor - LM-1, ZT-2 and others. Aftermarket system (you do not have it) that provides relatively accurate representation over wide range of AFR's - 10:1 to 20:1. Useful for performance tunning.

Re: Computer location and settings?
A WB setup is usually a few hundred dollars. You don't really need one with a display as data logging is the way to go. Besides, once a car starts to get fast, you can't watch or tune with the display. To install one will need an O2 bung in the pipe prior to the cat (use a SS one). Then run the wires into the vehicle.
The EBL Flash comes with a starter BIN. It is a basic calibration for a stockish engine. Shortly the EBL will come with several BINs that have different SA tables. This way you can pick the one that matches your setup the best and start from there.
Then it is a matter of checking and setting what you need for your setup. Such as:
Initial SA (set same as distributor base timing)
VATs (enable/disable)
Rev & speed limiters
BPC table
Then install the EBL ECM, connect the laptop, fire up the WUD, do a key-on, engine-off. Now check that data is coming in, move the go-pedal and observe the TPS% gauge. It should move with the pedal. Then try to read the current calibration (from the Flash screen).
Once it is all working flash your BIN into a bank. Set up a VE Learn session (it's in the doc's) and start the engine. Still OK? Then drive around, NO FLOORING IT. Just take a drive, let the engine warm up, and drive around.
Now stop in a parking lot someplace and check the VE display. There will be areas that have changed. Stop the VE Learn and flash the newly created BIN into the EBL. Set up another VE Learn and drive around some more.
Note that this driving around can also be to work and back to the house. They don't need to be special trips.
Once the VE table is decent the engine will be running much better now. For the high load areas of the VE table a WB is very helpful. For these areas you need to ease into the throttle and hit the high load. Then stop and check if it is too lean. This is why I mentioned not flooring it right off, too many do just that, and if it's lean. . .
Then move on to tweaking in the AE, maybe a SA tweak for more power, and go from there.
RBob.

Very very helpful RBob!
So I dont really need the WB then?
And when the more BIN files arrive will they be free as long as I got the EBL flash?

After you setup and use EBL equipped ECM your bin file will become unique for your engine - car combo. IOW, supplied bin is a good starting point, but as you perform more test drives, VE learns, bin edits, etc - the more unique it will become. That is why one bin file may work well for one combo and fall flat on its face with something else. Also, mail order tunes can not deliver improvement since they based on some other combination of parts!
If you are working on a tight budget then get EBL first, use it for a while, learn how to manipulate parameters. A stock engine like yours is close enough so that NBO can be used. Once you see that your performance has improved, to a point, or if you have AE, PE or WOT issues - get a WBO. Ideally, install WBO in conjunction with EBL from the start. However some WBO's have output signal accuracy issues - see extensive thread discussion on this subject else where.

Alright, thanks so much for all the help. I guess ill order the EBL flash and install it over spring break [about a month away] and look into adding a WB set-up after I get new heads and cam.

Re: Computer location and settings?
The BINs will have the main SA and low/high VE tables pulled from various stock BINs. There may be some modified BINs, not sure yet. For stock(ish) engines this will give a decent SA starting point. The BINs will be free to users and included on later releases.

Re: Computer location and settings?
Sorry to ask so many questions. But I looked for the computer today. To get to it I just need to take the panel off under the passenger dash? correct?
And it looks like I can just order the EBL flash now with a new ECM with it for like 80$ more, i might just do that so i can keep the stock one just as an extra, never know when I might need it. Do I need any info from my old ECM? like a model number or something?
Thanks.

Re: Computer location and settings?
Yes, remove the hush panel from under the dash. IIRC that year ECM is on a slide mount. Push the bottom of the ECM toward the front of the car, should hear velcro letting go, then pull straight down. Depress the locking tabs on the connectors and pull off.
No need for any info from your current ECM.

Re: Computer location and settings?
i was considering using ebl flash, but came short on $$$ after i dumped $3500 into building my 91 camaro's motor ..
just started tuning my setup with a simple chip burner, aldl cable, two chips, and a gp1 adapter .. all from craig's website (moates.com) .. came to $229 with shipping ..
so far its going good, after you start messing with making changes in the bin file and read up on how to do different things it all starts to make sense ..
hey RBOB, is there anything like your "ve learn" that i can use for my 91 camaro 305 tpi (730' ecm) .... ive been datalogging with tunerpro rt, and its allright, but i find it tedious to slowly go through and calculate all the ve table changes..
like the look of aldl, but you cant use it on the 730' ..

With the EBL systems the ALDL is left stock. This is so a scan tool can still be used. The data logging/flashing is done through a dedicated serial port on the EBL board. Cable is included.

Re: Computer location and settings?
Got the computer in. I was unsure of which BIN to use to start with so i picked the one called "EBL_F_TB" was this the right one to start with? I drove prolly 80miles or so with VE Learn and a 10smoothing and did 8 flashes and it seems to be running a little better. I plan on making another 3 or 4 flashes with just the VE Learn to try to get the higher RPM's a little better.
Just want to make sure im not totally messing up.

Re: Computer location and settings?
You will probably get some ping with that BIN. The L03 heads like a little less timing. In the BINs folder is also a text file that lists the available BINs. The EBL_F_0016.BIN matches your vehicle.
Since you have done a bunch of VE Learns what you can do is:
Make a copy of the EBL_F_0016.BIN
Read that copy into TP
Set up the BIN you did the VE Learns on as a 'compare' BIN
Then copy & paste the Low and High VE tables over to the new BIN
Save BIN & Flash it
-or- if you have already made a bunch of other changes to the EBL_F_TB BIN, just copy & paste the Main & Exended SA tables from the _0016 BIN to your current BIN.
-or- just flash the EBL_F_0016 BIN into a bank and try it out. It should run decently right out of the box.
Couple of notes: if you want VATs enabled in the ECM it is an Option Word bit. Can use the PromID field in the calibration to help keep track of the BINs. Keep notes of what BIN is in which bank and what has been changed in each.

I havent gotten Tuner Pro yet, I guess ill just flash the EBL_F_0016 BIN in and do some VE learn with that, I can prolly drive for about an hour or 2 with that today [I drive alot]
But I know what the VATs is, but I know my car has some annoying after market GM alarm system, it always goes off when im working on the car, im in the habit of always unplugging the battery if I have to do anything.
And when I get my new heads and cam and throttle body, how will I start to tune it, VE learn? Or should I just start with a new BIN?
But thanks for being very helpful, im sure my questions get asked over and over.

Re: Computer location and settings?
Well I did some VE Learn with that BIN and the car seems to run rich, smells like gas. I drove 80miles and almost all my values seemed to go down by about 4 or 5. And I only get like 14mpg combined, wasent it rated at 17 city? lol. Maybe its because I have one old tire in the back?
And I got tunerpro, gonna start playing with that this weekend I guess.
