Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
I have just installed an Ostrich into my 1990 Corvette. Used AUJP_8D bin and Super_8dm2 ECU mask.
The car starts but continuously surges and has an AFR of between 9 and 10 on my LM-2 air-fuel ratio meter.
When I pop back in the original chip it runs fine
I have ticked the checksum as I saw from other posts this was an issue.
Seems to connect and goes into emulate mode, saves changes but I have just tried the "verify" button in Tunerpro and it won't verify. ( I presume this "verify" check can just be done with everything powered up and engine not running?).
Anyone have any ideas on why the Ostrich won't verify. I'll also spend some more time on the Moates site and ask them.
Thank!

With Ostrich connected do a key on-engine off. CE light should blink once then stay lit. that tells you ECU is recognizing .bin. If no blink you are not running off .bin. You may would then be in limp mode.

Make sure you're using a bin that's set up reasonably for your particular engine setup.
Then disable the checksum by setting the mask ID byte to 0xAA. Don't use the auto checksum disable feature in TunerPro.
Then make sure you've got the emulator oriented correctly in the adapter.

The CE light does blink once and then stay on.
I have got a bit further down the track but still the same problem. As a test for the Ostrich I loaded the $6E Bin and Mask into the Ostrich and then tested the "verify" functionality (with just the ostrich connected to my laptop). The verification was successful which was good news.
I then re-loaded the 8D bin and mask into the Ostrich. As the file is an ECU file I used the XDF/IMPORT/ECU to load the file and all the values popped up fine. It says at the top no XDF selected which I presume is normal due to the fact it is a .ecu file.
Tested verification with this file and it worked (yay I thought!)
I then tested it in the vehicle and the car still seemed to still run on limp mode. Then I remembered that I hadn't ticked the disable checksum box.
I did this and saved the file, closed it and re-opened it. (apparently this is the correct way to do it according to another thread) It told me checksum had been updated.
But now that the checksum box has been ticked it won't "verfiy"!!!
So it seems the disable checksum box ticked causes the Ostrich not to verify????????

An ".ecu" file is the same as or idea as an .xdf. It is a "road map" to what is in the bin file.
If you are loading this to the Ostich, which I'm not really sure how you would, then this is why the car isn't running properly, it is not a .bin file. You are likely running on LHM. When you are expperiancing the poor running, do you get data on the ALDL connection? If not you are definatly in LHM.
When you use "disable checksum by upload", the file is no longer the same as the one that is loaded to Tuner Pro, so the verify will fail, because the one byte is different, indtead of being "8D" (for example), it will now be "AA", this is the cause for a verify fail.

THE MOATES SITE ALSO SAYS TO DO THIS BUT I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO FIND A POST THAT TELLS ME HOW.
MOATES: "Note that you may need to disable the checksum in your bin. This is done by changing the mask ID byte to 0xAA. More information on that can be found in the various tuning forums, including the forum at www.thirdgen.org/techbb2 (DIY PROM forum)"

Open the bin in TunerPro. Hit Ctrl + H to open the hex editor. The 9th byte from the beginning (the byte at offset 8) is 8D. Set it to AA.
You're done.
Watch the caps lock.

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Everything downloads and verifies and looks good but the car still runs the same. Surges, runs rich and check engine light flickers.
Ribbon loom is installed correctly (if it is installed the other way electric radiator fan runs full time).
I understand that the AUJP 8D BIN is the common bin to use. I am running a supercharger but the stock chip makes the car run fine (just a little rich due to injector change which is why I have installed the ostrich).
Any other things I should try?
Can you suggest any alternative BIN's to try for an auto L98 TPI 1990 Vette?
Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Tried another BIN for a 6-speed corvette to see if that worked but no luck. Using a G1 adaptor so disconnected the Ostrich completely and started it in limp home mode. Limp home mode ran better than when it was hooked up to the Ostrich (didn't surge).
When I download the BIN's my computer uses VLC media player to download the .BIN file. Could that be an issue? Might un-install VLC and try again.

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Just had an e-mail from Dave at Moates. He told me to check the label on the memcal. On the memcal cover it says ANHU.
Does that mean I'm using the wrong BIN (I'm using AUJP) and that's why I'm having issues?
The thing is I have checked both Moates and DIY-EFI BIN folders and this doesn't exist. Does this mean I have to get an EPROM programmer and download the BIN from the chip then modify this??

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Whatever you do stick with a Corvette BIN to start with. Note that there are programs available that will read the BIN out of your memcal directly to your laptop. This is via the ALDL link. Maybe Moates old ECM853 (ECM852?) program can do this?
You could try ANHT, however it is for a different rear end ratio.

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
I tried ANHT and it does not work. Radiator electric fan runs full time and the engine still runs rough (but better than AUJP!)
From the Corvette Action Ceneter Forum-Proms for a 1990 they say:
"hi the ANHT 4298 is for a 90-auto tranny with the rpo 3.07r rear gear.
--the ANHU 4303 is for a 90-auto tranny with the rpo 2.59r rear gear.
and one will not work in the other ecm the car will not start"

What the Corvette Action Center mentions about the two calibrations makes no sense at all. They both are used in the '7727 ECM in the same car, just a different rear ratio.

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Okay. Engine light does not flick once then stay on. Just stays on full time so I guess this means the ECM is not recognising the BIN.
I have a friend who is a software engineer currently downloading the BIN file from my Memcal and will give this a try when I get it e-mailed through.

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Reason the Ostrich wasn't seeing the BIN was that I had recently bumped one of the jumpers. Put this back to where it should be and SES light flicks once and it sees the BIN.
Still the same problem though. Everything now seems to be working as it should but it hasn't fixed the problem. I now have a copy of the ANHU BIN and this does not work through Tunerpro/Ostrich (it uploads and verfies fine). My friend also burnt me another chip with the ANHU BIN on it and I plugged this into the G1 and the car runs fine. This tells me that the BIN is fine but there must be an issue with the Bin getting corrupted or the Ostrich.
I think my next step will be to try Tunercat. That will hopefully tell me if it is the ostrich or issues with Tunerpro (or of course user issues). I have got a Diploma in Electronics Engineering (many years ago) so consider myself reasonably capable when it comes to these sort of things.......

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
I have used a binary viewer to look at the BIN before it was uploaded to the Ostrich and after it was downloaded from the Ostrich.
I noticed in the first line a couple of differences. Does this mean anything??
13 E3 04 42 31 E6 D8 50 AA 00 CA 01 C1 0 ...B1..P.......... (before sent to Ostrich)
13 E3 04 42 31 E6 D8 33 AA 00 CA 01 C1 0 ...B1..3..........(downloaded from Ostrich)

Re: Ostrich up and running but car running extremely rich!
Finally problem solved!!!
After many many hours of trying different BIN's and Masks etc etc I decided to bite the bullet and purchase Tunercat as my wife was about to divorce me!
Programmed the emulator with Tunercat and the same BIN I had tryed on Tunerpro an the car runs great.
Not sure why Tunerpro wouldn't work. To summarise the car wasn't running on limp mode. It was just running pig rich on the BIN loaded in via Tunerpro and every 10 seconds would run even richer and nearly stall.
As soon as I loaded the Otsrich up via Tunercat the AFR jumped up from about 10 to 14.7 and it stopped stalling.
