NETRES or CALPAK issue with a7747 on a TBI V6

I have a '89 4.3L in my Camaro and have been driving it with the stock PCM from the S10 Blazer I pulled with the motor from for five years. It works alright, but I know it needs some tweaking, and definitely will after I do the vortec head swap.

Anyhow, I bought a working (I plugged it into my wiring harness and powered it up without starting and had a steady CEL) 7747 from a V8 truck and have installed the Moates G2 adaptor and just can't get it to work properly. I burned a AKDX2088 cal onto a chip with the proper offset and confirmed it was programmed correctly. I installed it into the car and I get the PROM failure flashing CEL. The motor will start and drive suprisingly well on the limp mode. I tried a couple more times to set the chip into the ZIF and couldn't get it to stop flashing until I started the car and then fiddled with the handle and suddenly the CEL went out and clearly started running different.

So, I know the cal loaded onto the chip and the chip and adaptor are working, sometimes anyway. The cal wasn't very good. I tried to restart the car and I got the flashing CEL again and after starting it I was able to fiddle with the ZIF and get it to work, but again the cal wasn't good at all so I put the ABUL cal on the chip and tried that, but I never could get the PCM to stop flashing the CEL, so I don't know if this other cal is any better yet.

I rechecked all the terminals and pins on the adaptor and none were shorted when I soldered it on. All seems right, which makes sense since it did run on the PROM for a while.

I found a thread here (below), which was very inconclusive about whether the NETRES or CALPAK or whatever it may be called needs to be from the same type of engine(4, V6, V8). I confirmed that I have a V8 NETRES by the part number in the thread and have a suspicion that it may be part of the problem.

I can't get started tuning until I have this issue straightened out, so any help is appreciated. I would be willing to trade my V8 NETRES for someones V6, as I understand these V8 units are more desirable.

Thanks in advance.

The calpak for the 747 ecm would be numbered 16051637 for 4.3 and 5.0 and 5.7L gm acdelco part number 16051636.

Without getting too deep into it, the V8 Netres chip you have is still for a TBI and that may be why it works well in limp home mode for you. I think most if not all of your problem is with the adapter like TunedP said.

Re: NETRES or CALPAK issue with a7747 on a TBI V6

Thanks for the suggestions.

I wasn't aware that the calpak was common between all of the TBI engines. I'm curious to check which PN is in the stock PCM that I use now.

I will have to try it without the ZIF I guess. I am using the higher quality ZIF from Moates though for what that is worth.

Thanks again.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the resistor pack is common for all TBI as they are all different for the individual engines/vehicles but they have similarities that allow it to run somewhat decent.

Really sounds like you have a prom issue or zif connection problem. If your needing a 16051637 let me know I have a few but sounds like it went into lhm and its the correct calpak.

How would you install a memcal into this ecm

you wouldn't, that's why I edited it when I noticed it was a 747. Sorry for the confusion.

And I know it's a calpac not netres. Boy did I screw that one up! Pays to read the complete thread.
