Constructing RS232 Diag Cable (Craig M)...problems ordering parts. Help!

I plan to work with Craig M's sofware, and want to put together an interface cable as outlined above. I called Maxim-IC.com and they said the part MAX232EPE is on back order for 6 weeks. Anyone else had this problem? Is there somewhere else to find these parts? Where did you all obtain your parts? Can someone post part numbers? Any info appreciated!

This is the list I need for the circut...

6- 10uF Capacitors
1- MAX232EPE
1- 5V Regulator 7805
7- 10K Ohm Resistors
4- 2N3904 NPN Transistors
1- 20K Ohm Resistor

I also had one more question for those of you using this circut and CM's software...

In the picture, the right contact of the 7805 needs to be patched directly into pin 6 on the RS232 for the software to work. Is this correct?

If all of this works (and I dont fry my comptuer), I'm sending him money! LOL

Would I use the info on building the cable as a guide?Or is there a certain way to put it together?

Yes the 2 transistor circuit will work. That is the one I am using. It works beautifully.

WOaaahh....norman OK? I've been looking for thirdgen folks in OK doing DIY prom. I'd like to talk to you sometime about it..I'll drop you some mail.

You killed your car's computer, not your laptop, right? Just clarifying... Yikes.

I have decided to go with the two transistor cable instead of the complicated one. I actually ordered the parts today. The diode and two transistors were pennies, but Radio Shack's minimum shipping price was $2.50. Quite a rip off for $0.29 worth of parts, but oh well. All total, I spent about $15 on solder, wire, plugs, and the in-stock electronic parts. The parts list above took care of everything, but must of been for a slightly different cable FYI because there are some parts mentioned that you dont need for this particular cable.

Thanks for the replys all.

Light weight is good. Rigidity is good. Those are the great aspects of a corvette. To compensate for his weight, he might barter a small ammount of drag for downforce by use of aerodynamic devices. I wouldnt ever complain about being too light weight... The stock body may have limitations but all of us have limitations (that can be improved).

The 2 transistor circut's link is located at the third response to this thread by SATURN5. Click on that link, and you'll see a wiring diagram.

And how often do you go over 160?? I've only been around 150 or so ... and I do have a spoiler (which works) to provide more downforce at high speeds. Vette's weigh around 3300

I'm not sure of the context of you quoting me. (I was defending you) I dont go 160...with short tires and tall gears, I dont push my limits. You're car looks great, and the spoiler rocks too.

My car weighs 3400 lbs, thatsnot much of diff. If I get a t56 I'll go close to 200 mph.If lingenfelter can get a turbo 01 vette to go 235mph with stock suspension, then I can go 200 on all my mods(aside the T56),darn it.I hear there is road racing in cali, maybe someday.:lala:

200 eh..? What year is your formula? What are you're mods (including aerodynamics .. since a formula isn't really a very aerodynamic car).

.Jigga what?Stock formulas are the lightest and most aerodynamic of all third gens.

yeah, but 200 is pushing it .. i've seen a LOT of top speed tests with vette's (which are lighter and a lot more aerodynamic), and most top out around 190 or so. The wind resistance is hard to push against without a lot of hp.

a stock '94 6spd vette with the LT1 tops at 172mph. Quite a lot of hp is needed to get that thing to 28 more mph on the high end.

BUT.. have you ever heard of the Sledgehammer? It's a vette that went 255.54mph .. fastest vette ever.. of course it was a Callaway aero body and twin turbo etc.... very sweet car.
