Having Problems with Moates software
Having Problems with Moates software
I had a problem awhile ago with the Moates s/w on my car, I had sent the AKM
cable
back to Andrew Mattei and he speedily soldered in the 10K Ohm resistor needed
for MAF cars and checked the cable to make sure it was working properly.
I got
it back about a month or so ago and I am still having the same problem.
It
seems as though the cable is doing it's job as the message is being sent
out
to the car but as soon as I start pressing the '1' key to connect it says
"No
Link, Try Again". Now I thought maybe it was a problem with the computer
I was
using. So I got a different laptop and downloaded the Moates S/W again from
the site, still the same problem. So I figured okay, maybe something is
wrong
with my car, so I swapped in another ECM into my car...same thing. Okay,
maybe
there is something wrong with my ALDL port itself, so I tried it on my friends
car, same thing, "No Link, Try Again". Okay, WTF?! So to date, that is 2
different Cars, 3 different ECMs (2 '165, 1 '730) and 2 different laptops
(one
using Windoz 95, and the other Windoz 2000). So I decided to let the Computer
Gods that work on the network on the Air Force Base take a look at both
my
laptops for possible Com Port interruptions or anything that would interfere
with the operation of the software. Both guys are stumped as to what could
be
the problem. They suggested that maybe it was the scanware not recognizing
the
ECM since the laptop(s) were setup properly. So I allowed them to see the
download site for the Moates S/W, they took a look, followed the directions,
and downloaded it again. So we tried again and "No Link, Try Again". They
are
stumped and think that it might be the Moates S/W causing the conflict
somewhere.
Does anyone know if there are any other versions of free scanware that I
can
download that will work with the Andrew Mattei Cable??
Or are there any suggestions??
Thanks,
Brian P

Have you tried booting the computer to DOS? Don't go into Windows at all. Hit F8 as the computer boots and boot straight to DOS. Then run the program.
Try downloading the older software (E6b004.zip) and see if that works...in DOS...Don't use WinME unless you boot with a Win98 or 95 boot disk...
If you have an AC adapter, use that to check...(Your battery may be low)...
Make sure you have the correct usage specified for the older prog...It matters if you're running or just ign on for BIN capture...

Forgot to add that I have used the two older versions of the s/w to include the E6b004 version. All verisons of the s/w have failed to connect to the car. With the newest version of the s/w does the car have to be running or just the "key-on" position? I have gone into the s/w in just DOS mode by hitting the F8 key at startup and that does no good either.
I keep hearing about booting with a Win95 boot disk and am wondering how this is done, and will it screw up a laptop with the OS that I am currently using? Batteries are at full charge on the laptop by the way.
Thanks,

Booting from a WIN95 boot disk won't cause you any problems on the laptop. I see you already tried a new ecm so this probably won't help you but I'll put it out there anyway. My first ecm ran the car fine but would never link. I got a new, rebuilt ecm and it worked for one shot then that was it. Then the ecm was smoked. The car wouldn't start or anything. Turns out that plugging that 12V adapter in smoked the ecm for some reason. The rebuilt ecm I have now links no problem and I never plug the 12V adapter in.
I took a look to see if any ECM fuses were blown, no, it's all good. Switched to the old ECM and it still won't make the link. Does the car have to be running when I start the program or does the key just need to be in the key-on postion.
Damn this gets annoying. I have a problem on the car and I can't see what it is without scanning it and I have been messing with this laptop for over a month trying to figure out why it won't link up.
When you say boot up with a Win95 boot disk, how do I do that? I have a Win95 boot disk sitting here in front of me do I just pop it in, startup the laptop and run the filename? What advantage does that give me anyway?
Thanks,

I had the same problem as you. It turned out to be the com port on my laptop. Go into the BIOS and turn off the IR stuff and the internal modem if it has one. My comport was being hogged by the internal modem and the IR. After I did all this it worked fine. Links up first try ever time. Hope this helps.

Alright, tried again this morning with the computer in Command Prompt only mode. I get a message that says that:
"The system cannot open the COM1 port requested by the application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."
Then gives me the option to Close or Ignore.
I have not chosen to Ignore it and see what it'll do, but I think I am going to try that right now. I have gone into the Moates s/w change default settings and changed the COM Ports to 2-4 but I get the same message, this is all without the car being hooked up. Everything in the Device Manager is turned off but the COM Port 1 just like the AKM troubleshooting guide suggested and there is no Infrared support on this laptop.
Let me try the Ignore button and see what it does. I have tried to link with the car running and with it just in the "key-on" position and that has made no difference at all.
Be back to post my findings in a minute with the Ignore feature.

Yup, no dice...just like I thought. I am trying this with the stock 89 PROM by the way.
So here's what came across the screen and this is ver. 8.45:
Sending Request: 80-56-1-29
Receiving Echo/Response: 20,56,1,29,80,55,1,,,
63-byte data pack (should stop receiving at byte 64 <C/X> when successful):
1:29 2:80 3:0 4:48 5:2C 6:0 7:0 8:80 10:0 11:0 11:80 3:0 14:10 15:B 16:2 (these numbers keep changing everytime I hit '1' key)
Last byte from COM port: 29 (this number keeps changing too)
CkSum: 0/64 (this nubmer stays the same)
No link, try again... (it says this everytime, just as soon as I press the '1' key it displays this at the bottom)
Don't know what the problem is, I've tried everything. The worst part about this is that I don't know sh*t about Computers in the first place, so even if I could do something I hurt for the lack of knowledge.
I hope maybe someone can make some sense out of what I am getting. Oh well, I guess I could use the cable for a $100 high-tech fishing line if it doesn't work out.
Thanks,

Hi. I see you are having problem like I did. Anyways this is what I did and my 89 ECM connects every time.
After spending many hours building Max 232,233 cables and after playing around with them I found out that none of them worked properly.
I i decided to buld a Simple Two resistor interface from Andy's page. After completion I have booted the computer into the DOS mode and inserted the 10k resistor across A/B pins.
First program I tried was Craig's. I was getting same info on the screen and was always getting "No Link Try Again".
I Have two programs to work with our ECM's and the other program connected right away each time without any problems.
If you want this program email me. I do not remember who made it.
PS. What pin is your DATA? My is "E" and it works.
Good luck.
Dan.

DanielEK,
Hey man I got your mail but it says that "The APPN.INS file is missing".
Whatever that means. Are you sure the BRUN45.exe isn't Craig's earlier software? I seem to remember E6b004 was that version, I could be wrong. Can you send that again to me with the needed file that was missing. Thanks for your help I really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Brian P

Oh yeah, by the way I believe that on all the 89 TPIs that the data pin is the "E" pin AFAIK. I could be very wrong I really don't know too much at all when it comes to the computers and stuff like that, I just got a laptop and a cable that I can't get to work with the software I want to use

Here is the link. U can download it there directly without anything missing.
The link is about 3/4 down the page and it is the Craig's Q Basic software.
Good Luck

I don't know why you can't connect. The only thing that hasn't been answered yet is that the key just needs to be in the "Run" position, not necessarily running.
See this for my experience.

I can't think of any reason why you can't get it to work...It was cake for me.

I don't know if this helps but I was having the same problem as yours last year. I was using a 1227165 ECM, my own ALDL to RS-232 hardware, and Moates software. The PROM image was a 305 ci code "AUM". No matter what I tried the software wouldn't link. I replaced the PROM in the same ECM with the "ARAP" PROM for a 350 ci engine and it would link every time. I don't know what happened but this PROM won't link even when trying it in other '165 ECMs. When you tried other ECMs, was it with a different PROM too?
As an aside, I was putting a TPI from a 305 ci. on a 350 ci so I needed to use a 350 ci image. I was using the 305 ci image just to see if it would start. The engine started and ran better than I expected.

So far I have used 3 different PROMs, and 3 different ECMs. They were the stock 89 350ci chip, the Hypertech chip, and the '730 stock 87 GTA 350ci chip. I have used 2 '165 ECMs and 1 '730 ecm and 3 different laptops. I have gone thru the Andrew Mattei troubleshooting guide and the ALDL test. So far as I can tell the laptops are working just fine, no conflicts with the COM ports although when I bypass Windows completely and go to the DOS command prompt only, I get a message when I try to connect that says:
"cmd.exe-ecm845.exe
The system cannot open COM1 (2,3,4 no matter what I change it to in the BIOS and whatever port I change it to in Craig's default settings in the software) port requested by the application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the applciation."
So that has me wondering. I have made sure that the serial ports are enabled in the BIOS and that everything except the Com1 port in the Device Manager is the only thing turned on(relatively speaking). Is anyone using Windows 2000 NT Professional, or anyone at all that is having good success with Craig's software that can tell me how their's is setup??
Thanks,
Brian P

I'm having similar problems trying to use a 2 transistor cable. My com 1 port on my laptop (windows 95) has a check next to undocked, does that mean that com1 is disabled? Also how do I check to make sure it's enabled in BIOS? If you can't tell I'm not very good with the software side of a computer. Also on the cables the ground lead, will it ground off of pin A or do I need to find another chassis ground for it?
Thanks in advance, any help is appriciated

I know some people have mentioned booting from a MS-DOS 3 1/2" floppy disk made from a MS-DOS, Win95, or Win98 machine. The simple fact is *ANY* version of WinNT will not run a program like Moates software. It is a direct violation of what a WinNT box tries to do.....security. Moates program uses a sub program (brun45.exe I think) that does direct access to the COM port hardware (UART chips)without using the proper *WinNT* programming functions. WinNT does not allow programs to do this. The program must use the Win API functions to access all hardware (e.g. com ports, parallel port, etc). All I can tell you is that WinNT will never work with Moates software. This may not solve all of your problem, but it is now one step closer.
I think I get what you're saying. I had the same problem with the other latpop that was using Win95 can't remember if it was NT or not though, but it did the same thing. However, I can take into account what you're saying and I think I will give this laptop back to where I work. I might just go ahead and buy my own laptop and try all over again. What laptop(s) were recommended for use with this software again?? Obviously this Win 2000 Professional that is built on NT technology is as you have said "never going to work". I think I might just get one of those really pathetic latpops that are pretty cheap and I'll try again. I sure hope I'm using the wrong kind of laptop for this software and that is all it is....
I'll post a follow-up as soon as I get the "new" read:refurbished laptop and load it up with the Moates s/w...
Thanks,
Brian P

There is an easier option. I would stick with the laptop you have now. If you know anyone that has a MS-DOS, Win95, or Win98 machine try this:
1) get a formatted 3 1/2" floppy disk
2) use the Win95, Win98 machine and click start, the MS-DOS prompt and a black box appears.
3) type "format A:\" in the black box and hit enter and it will format the disk
4) type "sys a:" and it will create a bootable floppy disk.
5) insert the disk into your laptop and then turn the laptop on.
6) the laptop will read the disk and boot as a Win95 or Win98 machine (without the pretty pictures)
7) type "cd C:\dir", replace dir with the folder name that you put the Moates software in.
8) type the name of the Moates program
The program should start up. All of what I have outlined will not corrupt your machine in any way. It will just think it is a Win95 or Win98 machine until you turn it off. When you turn it off, remove the floppy disk. When you turn it on again without the disk, it is back to a Win NT machine.

That worked great. I was able to follow your directions and the commands were perfect. I tried earlier to make a boot disk since I had read about it in previous posts from other members but was unable to do so thru the Add/Remove Programs on my Win95 machine at home. So I had basically given up until you just helped out with that. Thanks alot.
I was able to locate the files for the Moates with no problem using the Win95 bootdisk, however, this is a significant difference:
Previously I had posted that when I went thru the Win 2000 NT safe mode Command Prompt (MS-DOS) and started up the Moates 8.45 s/w that it gave me a message that the system could not open the COM1 (or any other port) requested by the application. Accessing the s/w after making this Win95 bootdisk that message did not appear; and while I have not tried to link to the car yet (man it's freegin' 20 degrees outside!) that is definitely a step in the right direction.
Again, Thank you for taking the time to write out the directions in an easy manner for an otherwise Computer dummy.
I'll let everyone know how this works out for me.
Thanks,
Brian P

It is good to hear that everything is working so far. Please keep me posted on how it works out connecting to the ECM (I hear you.....cold weather is tough....I live in cold NH). What I outlined on booting as a MS-DOS (a.k.a Win95, Win98 machine)is the most basic and easiest way I know. I am happy that you had faith and tried it out. I have to run many of the *old* programs that I use using this method. It works every time. It doesn't allow you to use the pretty pictures that WinXX allows you to see, but it gets the info. from the ECM which (to me) is more important. As an aside, you can record the ALDL data from the ECM using Moates software and afterwards boot to WinNT (if you remove the floppy) and view the recorded data using the MS-office Excel (spreadsheet) program. You can even compare things using graphs (e.g. RPM vs. O2 sensor). That is the real power of the software. Anyway, keep me posted. I am willing to help.......I have been in you shoes in terms of computer stuff.

First of all I want to thank you for all your help!!
I hooked it up this morning using the Win95 bootdisk and WHABAM! we have linkage!
I was able to record the data in the excel format and view it easily. Thank you sooooooooooooo much for all your help, this will definitely be an invaluable tool for use in figuring out what ails the IROC.
I've been at this since September 01 and I was about to use the cable as a $85 fishing line :-)
Thanks again,
