in and out of closed loop

So I noticed while driving my ebl ecm enters and exits out of closed loop quite a lot. I thought once it goes into closed loop it is supposed to stay there?

What is your O2 sensor setup?

My first suspicion would either be a faulty O2 sensor, or sensor wiring. Or if you have a single wire O2 sensor with exhaust headers, in which case what commonly happens is the sensor cools off and stops outputting a signal to the ECM, at which point the ECM goes into open loop.

It's a new ac delco 3 wire heated o2 sensor. The sensor is actually very close to the top of the engine.
It uses to work fine, the issue with the open and closed loop only started today.

Re: in and out of closed loop

I guess I'd check the wiring on the sensor. What brand sensor?

Other thing the ECM needs for closed loop is reaching the correct coolant temp. So check the coolant temp sensor as well.

It's an AC delco O2 sensor.

Along with this open loop decel is likely set. This prevents surging on coast down.

Okay that explains it then. I was going ask about that just now but you answered it ahead of time. If you don't mind answering, if knock recovery is set to high, would that lead to high knock counts? Also, if my knock retards is set to 4°, would that 4 degree stack if it still hears pinging, or would it just go to a max of 4 degrees and it keeps pinging it will not retard anymore?

Knock recovery refers to how quickly it adds the timing back in after it stops seeing any knock feedback.

When are you seeing knock counts? It is normal to see a bunch on startup due to the noise from the starter.

If it's set to 4 degrees that's the most it will pull. If pulling 5-10 degrees out doesn't solve it, then it's likely not real detonation.
