Patch cords for laptop interface

I know they can be made for our engine/ECMs. I was wondering if anyone has made one yet? I would like to get the info on how to make one so that when I go and burn the chip I can have the ECM actually running off the BIN in the laptop to where I can modify the BIN real time/condition before burning the modified BIN onto the chip.

Your mixing some technologies together here.
You can use what's called a eprom emulator in lieu of a prom, and that can be used with a laptop. So far they all cost several hundred dollars, and none are DIY that I know of that will work with a GMECM.

the later PCMs can be flash programmed from a laptop, and no chips are involved

I was reading in a article online (I forget where) where it had the basics of the setup. It was saying to go through the Printer port. Many connections and they are all 2 way "live" connections. But it said the hardest part was getting the printer port pins to access the correct "Virtual" chip/BIN pins that is loaded into the Laptop. I know this is far from easy but I was just wondering what all was involved. I know not all the pins on my ECM chip are being used(I took a volt meter to them while it was running to check electrical signals.....)

Wait... the ECM goes off elect signals(duh) the Printer port has the widest available signal range(along with shear number) of all the ports so it is the easiest one to get this to work.
Now to make a interface should not be that hard. You just break it down to referance signal strength to get the desired effect intially in the ECM.

This will require ALOT of manual programing to get the BIN modifier program to convert the signal to its appropriate feed signal, but in all realm of posibility. HMMM something for me to work on in class...

Does anyone know off hand how many signals are interpretted by the chip itself? IE active feeds. If you can narrow that down you will get a deffinate number on just how many PINs of the printer port you need, and you can go from there.

I too have been looking at making my own cable. Here is a link where you can purchase a cable or a kit to make a cable your self. http://www.akmcables.com/ic.htm

Your still clueless, the 82-94 has a diagnostic port that can read ecm info but can't modify, only read data. The 95 and up ecm(or pcm) can be reprogramed through the diag.I I believe they have flash proms.Which is just like updating a bios for a pc ,if you have ever done that. The prom chips for our cars have to be erased by light. We have to extract the prom info from all 24-28 pins, save it as a file then modify it.I have an idea for cost effective real time programmer.Read my emulator topic on this board.

true formula5,
but craig talks of a ALDL mode 4.. mode 4 is altering the system Ram ... will remain altered till u turn off the power... so we can build a circuit based on a micro controller .. which switches car to ALDL mode 4 everytime teh car switches on and feed the necessary changes u made last time... what do u think...yeah emulators are a good idea..how much work have u done on them..constructing an emulator from scratch is a crazy idea i think.. what about PIC's can we interface that to MODE 4(whatever that is)

Reguarding the ALDL, I believe that it is only for reading your ecm, not for burning the chips. As for the flash prom's, you can use a flash prom, however, I think you have to remove the chip from the ecm to do it...it just takes a few seconds rather than 15-30 min's. I would ask glenn the moderator on this one. I have yet to burn a chip or even get the kit. I have been really busy with a few job interviews and a baby on the way Anyway, I plan to get the kit in the next month.

Actually no I am not clueless. You have no idea what I am planning on doing.

I want to read the DIAG port to read the info as the ECM sees it. I am going to have another mini computer feeding info to the ECM VIA printer port. I will have the info coming in from the ECM and see what needs modified. IE fuel/spark ect. In the MINI comp I change those values as they are sent to the ECM. I am not tring to reprogram through the ALDL connector, it is there so I can get the needed info from the ECM.
