voice controlled accessories

Allright, I just got into speech recognition programming, and thought it would be a great add to the car. The programming part wont be a problem, but I need to find a way to complete circuits through my parralell (printer) or com port. Does anyone know of somethign that could work for this? There has to be something.

Never actually used it, but here is EXACTLY what you are looking for:

http://www.mpja.com/allpict.asp?dept=68

Scroll down a bit and find "COMPUTER RELAY BOARD KIT "

You connect the PC to the board via Parallel cable (Centronix old-school style), and send it commands to activate the relays, which will in turn activate your circuits. You're welcome

Here is some more info in pdf format, it looks to be similar to the link I listed before: http://www.electronics123.com/amazon/datasheet/k74.pdf

Here's a cheaper pladce to buy it (33 bucks): http://www.web-tronics.com/pcprinporrel.html

You know, this thing seems to be cooler and cooler the more I read about it. I sure do wish that it has more than 8 controllable relays though. Beggers cant be choosers I guess. 92RS, if you do get one, keep updating on what you do with it.

Mycarsucks: If you want more than 8 relays, fit a multi LPT card into the PC and buy more relay boards. Dos supports upto 3 LPT ports, but if you get the cards that are fully customizable as in the address on which they sit, you can have as many lpt's as you have slots in your motherboard.

Do you have USB??
Though if you use USB parallel ports you will have to run win98.
If this is gonna be a permanent installation, then I would get hold of a used celeron mobo or similar and use that instead. A laptop is not really suitable IMHO.

A laptop is easier to power in the car. Using an inverter to power a PC motherboard isnt a a good idea. I've heard from more than one person that the power inverters do not produce "clean" enough power suitable for use on a PC. I thinks they are very suscepable to voltage spikes, also. Maybe this is all just BS, but it just what I have heard.

Also, USB would be much harder to use than the parallel port. A parallel cable would work just fine, since thats what the board is set up for.
