Trunk Latch
Trunk Latch
I can only open the trunk w/the key. The latch release motor works but it raises the trunk and then pulls it back closed on it's way down. It's done this ever since the dealership worked on it last. Does something just need to be realigned? Thanx
yeah, mine does that too sometimes. what i've done was this.
1. before unbolting twist the twisties on the side for the glass gap when the lid is down.
2. if that doesn't work then yeah realign by putting the motor down a little and then that way when you open the lid it pops up off the down lid piece.

Your problem is caused by weak hatch struts. The hatch must raise sufficiently to clear the pull-down unit. Otherwise when you pop the hatch solenoid and the pull-down unit raises, the striker sensing switch on the hatch pull-down unit will contact the hatch loop and cause it to latch and pull the hatch back down. Get new hatch struts from Pep Boys or another auto parts store that offers a LIFETIME WARRANTY and save the receipt.

I don't think the trunk struts have anything to do with it. The latch never let's go. I've had somebody pull up on the lid before after I pushed the switch and it pulls it clean out of their hands.

Ah, I see. You have the second version of the pull-down unit. They changed the design mid 91 after vin# 173202. Your unit has a plastic frame to the pull-down unit and a square stamped steel hatch loop. Your version is designed to hold the hatch until it has reached the top of the limit, then it is released. I ws confused when you said you popped the hatch. I was under the impression the new style hatch pull-down units were only opened by the key. Sorry, I can't help.

My hatch has started the same thing this week!It goes up and right back down.I've tried running around to pull it up after I pop it but it pulls out of my hands.I did have to hold it open before though since it wouldn't stay open itself(I gotta knot on my head to prove it!lol).I was about ready to post about it myself!I've got a 89 rs btw.
