I am so confused...

I did a search on manual fan switches and after reading them I have to say I am so confused. I want to get a lighted billet toggle switch from Autozone. It has a blue LED at the tip that switches on with the switch but I am so confused on how to make this work. I know very little in electronics so please write like you are talking to a kid lol Ok I know I need to hook up a ground to the green and white wire. I think I saw this wire in the wire pack near my firewall. Do I connect to this? What guage wire do I use? I take that wire and attach it to the load terminal on the switch right? Then take a ground wire from the ground terminal and ground it to the body of the car right? What guage wire is used there? Then I think I need a 12v power source. Where would that be in the car? What wire guage would I need to hook that up with? It is basically this switch http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33695 How would I make this work without starting fires or blowing stuff like I read? I am very confused right now and I am in desperate need for someone to clear this up for me Thank you.

Dang I never even saw those posts. Thanks MdFormula350. Just one thing to clear up where exactly can I tap into the green and white wire that would make it closest to the hole in the firewall? Can I just tap the green and white wire in the wire pack going by the drivers side firewall?

You can get power to the switch by tapping off the relay (for the secondary fan) that's bolted to the firewall, near the brake booster. This is the way I have it set up. The ground wire I routed back thru the firewall and attached it to the body of the car.

Thank you that's exactly what I wanted to hear. It is the green and white one correct? So I don't need any fuses or relays or anything that I read about? Just hook up to the green and white wire coming out the fan relay attached to the firewall and ground it using the switch right? What guage wire did you use?

Ok I dunno if it looks the same on your car (might wanna verify first) but on mine the relay all the way to the right is for the secondary fan. I took the GREY wire and cut some insulation off (without cutting the wire). I wrapped new wire to the bare wire, routed it inside to the switch, then took more wire and routed that from the switch, back outside to a ground on the body. Not sure of the gauge of the new wire I used but it's a little thicker than the ones on the relay. I'm not using an extra fuse with this setup (I probably should) but so far I haven't had any problems. HTH.

Hmm I will get back to you tomorrow on the wires coming out the relay. I need to make sure I remember the right colors. Thanks for your help.

Ok I checked out the car this morning. It has three relays to the right of the brake booster. The first one closest to the booster is for the MAF power. The 2nd carries the number 10094701 abd has 2 big orange wires, 1 green, and 1 black. The the last relay farthest from the booster carries the number 14078907 and has 1 orange, 1 yellow, 1 tan w/white stripe, 1 green w/white stripe, and 1 black w/white stripe. Can anyone give any insight?

Umm I have seen that pic a lot but I don't even have that number relay in my car anywhere underneath the hood

Edit: No I have dual electric fans

it still should work. you first need to get the switch to work, and then worry about the lighting after..

in this pic, this is how i did my passengers side fan.

Hey the relay for the secondary fan will only have 4 wires coming off it. If you're not sure which one is for which fan, have someone turn on the A/C while you feel or hear which relay clicks. That'll be the one that controls the secondary fan. Once you get that done, use a test light to find which wire gets power with the ignition ON. That's the wire you wanna tap off of.

The diagram above is exactly how you do it.

Ok I looked at the fan relay in the front next to my radiator. It is number 10038311 It has four wires 1 black w/red stripe, 1 orange, 1 yellow, and 1 green w/white stripe. So I tap into the green w/white stripe wire run the wire into the car and connect it to the switch. Then I take a ground from the switch and run it to the body? Is this correct? How thick of wire should I use? I don't any scorched wires or fires.

To verify if that's the right relay for the secondary fan, use spare wire to ground the F terminal with the ignition ON. If the fan comes on, then you found the relay.

Ok now I think I know what I am doing. So I won't need any extra relays or fuses or anything like that? Just wire it like I said?

It's probably better to put a fuse in there but like I said I haven't had any problems with mine without a fuse. Yeah wire it like you said, and make sure you know which wire it is you're supposed to tap off of. One wire will have juice all the time (thick wire that goes to the fan) and another one will have juice only with the ignition ON (thin wire for the A/C switch, coolant temp switch). This is the one you tap off of.

when using a regular toggle switch, there is no need for any extra relay or fuse, because you are using that main relay and just grounding it, just like a stock fan switch does..

as far as getting it the led to work in the switch i would use a fuse just incase, because you are working with 12 volts and anything could happen, better safe than sorry..

Ok here is the million dollar question...how the hell did you guys get past the firewall?!? I can't see any openings to stick the wire through. From inside the car there is so much stuff packed under the dash that finding a spot to peel back all the padding is difficult to say the least. How did you guys route the wire through?

Wouldn't that cause the wire to be damaged? I was thinking of running it in the fender then drill a small hole near the hood release latch and bring the wire in. By the way where originally did you splice into the fan line? I did mine in the front of the car and brought the wire around the engine bay to the drivers side. Does this sound right?

Drivers side firewall? Which relay is it then? I spliced into the relay on my passengers side front of the car. There is a relay there which is the fan relay.

The relays are probably in different locations, seeing as yours is an 87 and ours are 91's. On the driver's side firewall there are two holes, one that the steering linkage comes out of, and the other I think is for the gas pedal cable. I used this one to route my wires.

O ok. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't cutting into a relay I wasn't supposed to. I will look to see where my throttle cable goes through maybe I can get it through there. They really packed that firewall good. I thought it would be like my Toyota where it isn't hard to find a place to put a wire through. Boy I was wrong lol

Well I don't know for sure where your secondary cooling fan relay is. I know on mine it's near the brake booster. Up to you to find yours. You should turn on the A/C and the secondary fan should also turn on. Disconnect that relay you found and if your fan doesn't come on, then that's the right relay.

Hmm I would check it like you said to but the car is in kind of pieces right now under the hood Undergoing a nice upgrade Maybe I will just hold out on doing the switch I thought it would be an extremely simple thing but turns out it's going to take a little more than I can do right now

Maybe someone else with an 87 can verify where the exact location of that relay is.
