The VATS module is inside the lock cylinder in the ignition. Their is an orange wire coming out of it going down the steering column. You must remove the steering wheel to get to it. You must know the resistor code in you key to get a new module. See your GM dealer with your VIN number and they will get you straight.

thats not what I am talking about, thats just where the contacts are that mate the resistor in the key is, I am looking for the module, computer what ever you want to call it that runs the VATS system. I know it is some where in the dash and it isn't part of the ECM.

If you know please let me know

Thanks
John

The VATS module is located on the passenger side way up under the dash above the heater core. It is a ***** to get to, make sure it's what you want to get to.

Yep'r, actually easier to take out the windshield first and get it from the top. It's between the firewall and the front side of the passenger side defroster duct.

What wires were run to and from it?? I don't want to replace my VATS, I want to REMOVE IT!! I want to take the 12 volt line that goes to it, and simply run it to the 12 volt sending line running from it. That way the VATS can't stop my car from starting.

The VATS doesn't work that way. The VATS module sends a square wave signal to the ECM when the correct PASS key is used. You need to either simulate the signal with an oscillator of approx 55hz or get a new prom for the ECM that does not have the VATS function enabled.

Yep, for obvious reasons general motors made the factory theft deterrent system (VATS) difficult to defeat. You may get the starter to crank by moving wires around under the dash, but you won't be able to get the injectors to pulse.

again take the trusty scan tool and see if the vats is keeping the car from starting. it will tell you on the scanner if it is preventing it from working. if the scaner says it is ok, then the vats is not your problem.

good luck

You don't even need to scan for SES codes. The "security" light will tell you if the correct PASS key was recognized and the VATS is working. If the security light goes out after approx 2 sec then the decoder and the pellet contact are OK. If the light stays on, VATS is malfunctioning.

that may be true on half the cars, but on the other half (mine included) the bulb is burnt out , so the easy way for me because i have a snap on mt 2500 is to use it.

thanks
