Blower Motor Problems - Can't Figure It Out
Blower Motor Problems - Can't Figure It Out
Still having blower motor problems in my '88 GTA.
1. Motor only works on high if at all. Only works less than 1% of the time. I had replaced with a new blower motor even though the old one works fine. Checked both motors with direct battery connection.
2. I realize that the resistors may be bad causing it to only work on high. Where can I get this part for my car? I've attempted pulling 1 or 2 from the junkyard from Trans-Ams or firebirds and they never work.
3. Switches are good. I replaced the electronic push-button heater controls just to verify. Same result with either module.
4. When the switch reaches high position I hear what I think is the relay clicking. If I read the voltage across the hot and ground to the blower motor I can get 12V DC. Still the motor doesn't run? This really baffles me.
5. What the hell is the little black thing mounted next to the blower motor relay with the brown wires coming in/out of it? I am assuming the big one is the blower motor relay. It is next to the motor and has pink/red, brown and black wire coming from it I believe. Is that smaller unit to the left and the relay worth replacing? I notice it is a different connection than a Firebird of the same year.
6. Fuses? Exactly how many fuses affect the blower motor? I can only find one on my fuse panel. It appears to be good but I think I am going to replace all the fuses tomorrow anyway. Most are probably original.
7. Is there anything thing else under the dash that I should know about for the blower motor? That is besides the climate control unit which is okay? And wires of course.
8. I am really getting frustrated and any help would be appreciated. Seriously! I have searched and read all the previous blower motor threads.
Thanks!
J

theres only 1 fuse in the fuse block try getting a resistor from the dealer not sure how much it costs but its worth asking and getting one that works, is the connection at the blower good and clean

The resistor block will be obvious if it is bad. They either physically break where the coils attach to the terminal or it burns at the terminals. If the plug has a purple wire that is the motor feed side. With everything hooked up measure from the purple wire to any good ground and have someone step through the different speeds. The voltage should move in increments as the switch is increased towards max speed. At max speed the relay engages and feeds full 12 volts to the motor. It is important to do this with the blower motor hooked up and everything normal. After thinking about your problem the only thing I can come up with is that with the load of the motor a high resistance connection in the circuit is causing the problem. Because of the current the motor draws the switches and wiring are prone to this. If you are running no load tests you may read 12 volts until the motor is in line. If you read the correct stepping voltage at the resistor then go to the blower plug and try to read voltage with the motor still plugged in and see what it is. If it not there or very low then trace all wiring to try to pinpoint the loss to a connector or plug. The blower relay has 2 larger wires in the plug assembly. You can place a jumper across the 2 heavy wires at the plug and the blower should run at high speed. That will tell you that at least from there it is OK. You can swap a fan relay for the blower to test, I have had 3 blower relays in my 89 so far. try to get it working on high first, then work your way back. PM me if you want and I will try to help you along.
Okay here is an update. I pulled what I believe is the blower motor relay.
This relay has 2 purple wires, a red, a pink or light yellow, and a black. The red is always hot (I assume straight from the battery). The black is ground(I checked resistance to blower motor ground wire and found no resistance). The one purple goes directly from the relay to the blower motor(again checked by resistance). The pink/light yellow I am assuming comes from the high speed setting in the climate control switch. The other purple comes from the blower resistor.
I was able to take the relay apart and see the operation. It is labelled made in Canadian so I am assuming it is not original. Aparently, the purple to purple is connected in the relay through the first 3 speeds. When the the climate controls in put into high voltage comes through the pink/light yellow wire and triggers the relay. The relay is then connected from red to purple(which should be 12V battery direct I am assuming).
Well to make a long story short I pulled this relay and jumped the purple to purple with a piece of 14 guage solid copper. Turned the key to on position. I was able to go through each speed from low to next to high no problem. Blower operated perfectly. Next, I jumped the red to purple. Turned the key to on the viola, again perfect high speed operation.
The relay does switch properly from low to high and voltage does pass through it but the blower does not operate. Although resistance tests of the relay itself seem to vary. I am from 2 to 50ohms accross the the pink to pink teminals. I used a 9volt battery to charge the relay. When I read the red to pink terminal I am getting a 1 or 2 ohm resistance many times.
When I use a jumper wire the blower motor operates properly. Have I found my problem. Faulty relay???? If so where can I get the part?
On my '88 GTA it is a different connector type for this relay. It is not the same as the fan relay. That would be too easy.

well good to see you found the problem , the part you found isnt after market it is original if it says made in canada and the reason i say that is i work for GM's head office in oshawa ontario just outside toronto and i made those for about 2 years, moving on you cant buy it at a dealer or go to a junkyard and pretty much any gm car or truck you find is the same part, so pull one or two even off any one and try it, you can visually see if its no good

What the hell is that smaller unit to the left of the high speed blower motor relay? It has 2 brown, one brown-white, and one grey wire.
I yanked it off and the climate control fan switch had no power. It seems that one brown and the brown-white go to the same connector on the blower resistor. I am guessing the grey or other brown probably goes to the climate control switch??? The other to the fuse block???? Or vice-versa????
I purchased the blower motor relay from AutoZone and this is what they sold me. It looks the same and it matches one I pulled off of a '88 Firebird in the junk yard. Although, neither fit because the connector is configured differently in my GTA.
