ADDING A defrost switch

I have a firebird 1989 2.6 700 R4 that did not come with a rear defroster.

I got a switch and wiring but when I hooked up the switch there is no voltage coming out of the connector.

ALso when I push the switch It does not lock into position. and the light does not come on.

Ive tried to trouble shooting the defrost switch but when I push the button the switch does not lock.

If I take the power wire going to the defrost switch and jump it to the defrost wire I get power.

DOES ANY OF YOUR SWITCHES LOCK EVEN WHEN THERE IS NOT POWER

I have even try to bench test the switch to the battery. Still no voltage going to the defroster.

Hook up power to the switch many different ways to the batteery but still no power will come out of the switch.

Give me some help here. Tell me what you think

The switch will not lock when there is no power to it, i.e. when the car is off.

Defroster

NO not yet

Did ground the defrost wire to the frame but more of the same.

IAm are missing something like other relays

I only have power coming out of the orange black wire. The blue wire has nothing. But I tried to test the switch on my battery.

And it still would not work

Defrost switch

Replaced defrost switch. And checked wires and it started to work

Oh Yea

Also got a 1989 hatch with defroster from the J/Y for 125.00

Has the same grey interior. But will have to paint the hatch.

The J/Y just got the car in that day. Iam going over after work to see if there is anything else that can be used.

J/Y

Well

They have you by the short hairs. Live in a small town. Normally J/Y charge 100.00 for it.

The window stays fogged up in Wa so the defroster will be useful.
We get alot of rain.

I also got a Sun Shade for 15.00 along with the brackets and will install them later.

Still have GTA rims / Tires shims to swap.

Defroster to install and paint hatch.

Hatch switch and sylenoid to install.

These the parts are coming.

I still need GTA / TA Tail lights 1985-92

GTA / TA hood 1985-92

Then paint it metalic green

Well that about it.

The wife will love it.

kurfbird,
I was curious. I have the switch and hatch for my car but was unable to locate the timer for it. Did you find a relay and locate the timer? If so can you tell me the location/s?

FYI If the car at that junkyard has an AC delete box (no AC) you could sell it in the classifieds for~$60-$70. To help pay for the hatch.

Switch location Defroster

Okay here is where the relay switch for the rear defroster is on my firebird. It is on the passenger side dash lower by the door frame Remove the plastic cover bottom one then the next one up. You will see the switch or where it should plug in.

It screws from the inside by ECM to the outside. Will have to unscrew the ECM then use a 7mm nut driver to remove the screws.

If you can't find one let me know. I can get one from a junk yard. You can send me the money for shipping.

This is a dealer item about 55.00
