Right headlight won't raise up

I have a 91 Formula and the right side headlight just quit raising. Does anyone have any ideas? Or better yet a wiring diagram.

There's a lot of really good information on that topic if you do the digging. I just fixed my left side headlight which did the same thing ('90). Mine happened because the gel bushings crumbled, which is likely what happened to yours also if you can still hear the motor spinning when you try to raise them. If its not turning (you can hear it, or the little black knobby on top of the headlight motor will also spin) then it could be wiring, or a motor failure of some kind... I don't have a wiring diagram for you though... could just do a voltage check on the leads when you try to turn them on to verify all the upstream wiing is okay.

But anyways, if the motor is turning, and the light just isn't raising, thats not too hard to fix, especially on the right hand headlight. I can help you out with that if thats the case.

I was messing with it this morning and I have it working now. All I did was manually rotate the moter back and forth a couple times. and now it works good. I wonder if I have a bad spot in the motor. I have had the car stored for the past 5 years. You think that could be the issue?

No, Heckler has it right. The gel inserts or bushings are bad. Your fix is only temporary. You need to rebuild it with a headlight repair kit that has Delrin bushings. I sell two versions. TDS 207280, ($6.25) has just the 3 bushings, (enough to repair one headlight). TDS 209280, ($20) includes enough parts to repair the pair of headlight motors. It includes 6 bushings along with the side cover gaskets and motor housing gasket and a packet of synthetic grease. Both kits include detailed step by step instructions. You can download the instructions for 209280 from my web site. They are on the lower right side under "Documentation".

so if the motor top just keeps spinning and takes it a while to get the light up or keeps spinning once the light is down it needs the bushings? if so can i just the 3 bushing pack to fix it and i wont need any gaskets or anything else?

Thats what I did. It might be smart to get a new gasket, but for the right hand light, you don't have to take off the motor mount, so you'd only need the one, I wouldn't worry about it, mine looked fine. Its a really easy job once you have the bushings and as long as you don't break the screws, its worth the wait to get some penetrating lube in there and give it some time, cause its a huge pain if you snap one.

Yes.

If you replace the gaskets or not is entirely up to you. That's why I offer the different kits. Some people want to replace the gaskets or have them on-hand in case they tear one when disassembling the actuator unit. I include two new screws with the kit in case you snap off the head. It is common to snap the two that hold the motor to the actuator housing. In the instructions I recommend spraying them with a good penetrating oil such as Aero Kroil or PB Blaster. You should also tap them with a hammer. The shock seems to help break the corrosion free. If you snap a screw head, the screws I provide are longer so you can just drill it out, then attach a nut to the screw where it pokes through the body.
