first things first you should try to replace the switch it self

I replaced the switch- also the gear indicator in center console light does not come on so it is a common wire that controls all off the interior light. I have the wiring schematic but dont see the problem.

I may have jsut encounterred this same problem last night....
I was hooking up some gauge lights that I removed when I took out my interior and all the sudden I hear a click and smell burnt stuff....next thing I know, wires that used to read 12 to 14 volts are now reading 44 volts with the key in the on positions. None of my interior lights work now except for the overhead light.

Mine does not read 44 volts but like you said, the only working light is the overhead. Let me know if you figure something out before I do. Thread Starter

Actually it turned out to be pretty simple, I think. The 5 amp fuse was missing. Yeah i know it was a real bonehead thing to miss- coulda swore I checked it like 3 times. Maybe it was a combo of several things. I dont know, except like it still needs 5 bulbs too. And then I still have to put it back together.

Ahh. Yea. We blew mine changing it over to LED's the other day. Bugger tested as positive to the multimeter too. So it took like three checks up until I did a visual. Taking it apart is easy. Take out your hush panel (panel under the dash) then take out the panel that sits under your steering column. All of these are 8mm I believe. Drop the steering column (13 or 14 mm) it's two nuts. Real easy. Remove the screws over the panel, torx 20 I think. Remove the screws holding the glass one. 7/32 I think. Remove the two screws holding the metal reflector on, also 7/32. On the bottom there should be two 10mm nuts holdding the whole assembly in place. Remove them, if you're lucky, neither of the bolts behind them is freewheeling, so it should be easy. Hardest part is getting behind there and removing that damn speedometer cable. There is a place to push on the retaining hook, but it's rotated towards the bottom left of the cluster. Just feel around back there until you get it, and Pop! There you have your cluster.
