Best way to bypass VATS
Alright ill start it off by saying i did a search and saw many ways to bypass the VATS on my 91 camaro. i have something wrong with my key cylinder to where it doesn't twist all the way, it stops before it can reach the part where the starter kicks on. i bought a key cylinder at autozone for 40 bucks, and a new steering wheel to go with it
. i have read many different ways to bypass the vats, whether it be taking the resistors off the key and soldering them to the wire going from the ignition switch to the ecm, or connecting the 2 wires under the dash..
basically what im saying is what is the best way to bypass it, without using money.

burn a chip with it disabled (this would be the "cheapest") but, I am sure you don't have the prom burner or know anyone personally. I guess like you said the resistor method would work pretty cheap and done right you could take the resistor with you if you leave the car for some time

will the new cylinder turn to the start position?
if not, that is not a problem with VATS, something isn't installed right with the lock cylinder.
buying the right resistor that matches the key & soldering it in would be the cheapest way.

no, i haven't installed the new cylinder yet. I got the wheel off, but then found out that i needed a lock plate removal tool. i was pretty PO'd when i found out, but yeah i am probably going to do 1 of 2 things, either take the resister off of my key and solder it to the wire, or buy a resister (where to buy?) and solder it to the wire.
also, my question is where do i solder it to the wire? will anywhere do? and which wire. i think its the yellow one... or is it the white one...

well, the PO of my cay did something totally different, looks like they took the yellow wire, cliped it and attached another wire long enough to reach the starter, works just fine???

hmmm, oiginally it had the 305, PO pulled the motor and tranny, the motor was totally stock. I put in the 350, I also had to run the fuel pump hot wire to the + side of the dist...so I don't know how they originally kept it running???

91WhiteCamaro, there are 2 white wires covered by an orange cover on the lock cylinder.
on the old lock cylinder, cut it about 6 inches above the little connector, solder the resistor there. then tape it up so it won't short on anything & just plug it in under the dash.
don't try to mess with removing the resistor from the key, you'll probably only damage it taking it out & the contacts on it are brass & its very hard top get solder to stick very good to brass.
you can get resistors at most any electronics store.
