Vats -- How do i measure resistance of the key???
So i have a guy with a 89 iroc 5.7 tpi 7004r auto and a borg posi disk rear end and it starts somtomes and other times it locks itself out for a couple mins i have looked around and everyone says to find he resitance but know one says exactly how and im lost i want to buy a bypass box but i need to get the resistance reading... How??? Thanks!!!

use an ohm meter and touch each side of the resistor chip embedded in the key with the test leads, you will see the value then, should be anywhere between 100-1000 ohms

press the test leads to the chip with a good amount of pressure.

Make sure your test leads aren't touching the key and the "chip" at the same time, that will give 0 resistance, I found it was helpful to clamp the key in a vise and then check it.

you know the problem is always in the key cylinder, there are two small leads actually coming out of the tumbler and they twist and get pulled everytime it goes for a start eventually breaking connection and not sending the right resistance signal to the module. I`ve changed the tumblers and it takes some time and patience, how much is that box to delete it?

its only 25 bucks plus shipping so less then 35 or else i would probably just replace the cylander i might down the road tho but for now..
If i bought a cylander and key would i just put my old chip in the new key so it would register the right resisance to the vats box?
Thanks all you guys!

If you replaced the ignition tumbler you would need to have it re-keyed to your original key. A good dealership parts counter guy should be able to do that for you.

You can't swap the resistor, well maybe u can never tried.. but you're suppose to buy a new key blank with the correct resistance for your car and cut it to match. Check the key first though, I've seen a few vats keys that fluctuate between different resistances when put in a vats interigator. I've fixed a few vats problems that way, others were the cylinder as mentioned above, but for as easy as it is to test you'd be stupid not to test the key first.
