oil pressure gauge

My oil pressure gauge is pinned past 60 whether the motors on or off and so is my volt gauge...are the gauges bad or is it the senders?

Re: oil pressure gauge

I would say it is the gauges, they have kind of poor contacts. In my 88 IROC the oil press. gauge would stick sometimes and when I hit the panel it would start working again. Also there's no sender for the volt gauge it's just hooked up to an ignition wire.

Re: oil pressure gauge

Which car??

You can pull the connector off the sender unit and ground it on the block. If the gauge shows 0, it's good and the sensor is bad.

Re: oil pressure gauge

I believe that on the 87 block, the oil pressure sender is by the distributor, towards the driver side. It should have a blue wire.
If that wire terminal is corroded (or even disconnected), the gauge will read full psi. If the wire is grounded, the gauge will read 0psi.

Hope this helps.

Re: oil pressure gauge

#1 A reading with the car off is completely irrelevant, the gauges are not controlled, they just "relax" and can show anything.

#2 As I said, locate the blue wire on the oil pressure sender and ground it on the block (or any good known ground). If the gauge reads zero (with the key ON, of course), your gauge is likely good.

Re: oil pressure gauge

Call me crazy but shouldn't the guage peg, when it's grounded?
I have never heard or done any that went down when grounded.

You're partially right, some do.
But the fuel and oil gauges on thirdgens show full left (down) with 0 resistence from the sensor and full right (up) with 90 Ohms (full resistence) from the sensor.

Hope this helps.
