blending in head unit
Im looking for a new stereo but I would like to find one that looks like it belong in our cars I dont want to go stock because I want a CD player. I want funtions like nav and USB but I will do without as long as otherwise its a good working and looking piece. "looking good" means blends in well with the sharp lines and angle that makes up the camaro style
any suggestions?

Re: blending in head unit
I saw a gm factory one on ebay that had a buy it now like for $120 or something. It even has a wiring harness already made so it's just plug and play. I think your looking for something with a red display too it. So it looks factory. I read that some of head units you can buy can change the color of the display. You just have to find one that does that. I would rather have a non-factory head unit as you get more options than a factory one. Some people change the color of the led in the face or removable face. This is hard to do on some head units. Easier on the remnovable ones probably. Then there is transulcent vellum paper. You could buy this thin paper and cut it so it fits inside the face. It would make the led look red instead of white. Well at least on my JVC head unit it would make white led red. I have'nt tried this yet though.

Re: blending in head unit
if you want an aftermarket unit that blends in with our 80's interior, then I'd suggested looking for vintage aftermarket headunits?.... I just went with an all red and black Sony unit since my interior is orange and red... Good luck, let us know if you find anything...

Re: blending in head unit
The one on ebay probably would definitly look stock since that is what it is. Would have the theft lock turned off on it and theft lock can be turned back on. Although I don't think anyone would want to steal a stock AC Delco cd player since it is very basic and just plays cd's and music. I still stick with my JVC unit though.

I think it was the 90 GM vehicles that had the cd radios. So if you want something that looks like a gm product get a gm product. It's all about your personal tastes though. So to each his own.

Re: blending in head unit
Pioneer makes or made a head unit that fits directly in a 1.5 din radio opening for gm or chysler. I still have mine and it looked great in my iroc. I dont have it in my car anymore since I went back to the factory bose radio. There are other brands of radios that fit directly in a 1.5 din opening.

Re: blending in head unit
Pioneer and JVC (And a few others) make a din and a half (1.5 DIN) I like the offerings from pioneer better, but that is just my personal taste. They do look like they belong there though and bass response is light-years better than any factory radio. The really interesting thing is that most 1.5 din's are really affordable! Check them out. Re: blending in head unit
If you really want to keep the stock look but get the functionality of a new unit you could possibley do what we helped my friends dad do in his 56 corvettes. I made a box out of wood that held a brand new headunit in the trunk. I covered the box with matching carpet (unit was recessed with a hinge door at the top to close the front) left the back open 3in from the wall for air flow and made a small square side vent. Now the trick is to get a unit that accepts a wired!! remote (usually done in marine applications). We took out the seats, lifted the carpet made a very slight cut underneath the driver seat. fished the wire to the trunk and ran the wires for the speakers, power, etc.... Then reinstalled everything. To use the new player he simply reaches under the seat and pulls up the controller. Then when he gets out he tucks it underneath the seat and everythign looks original. Now i know this can be a PITA to change cd's but if you use USB data like you wanted its definaitly doable. Or get creative and do under seat or even center console mounts are sucessful you just have to watch the length of the unit and heat! Hope that gave you some alternative ideas. Growing up in high school i did a bunch of things like this for my friends. You'd be surprised what you can create when you try... Here's a link to a marine wired application so you know what i was talking about.

I've seen stock radio dissected & the face & ***** pulled off. Glue the ***** to the face & just create a "fake" radio to hide your custom radio.

Re: blending in head unit
Ive pulled about 5 of these radios out of junkyard cars.3 came from Roadmasters,1 from a Roadmaster wagon and 1 from a LeSabre. These units with the 5 band eq seem to be very sought after.I believe they also came in syclones and typhoons
