Alternator Wiring Help

Hey guys, got a question about alternator wiring. Excuse the jerry-rigged carb and wiring for now, I was only looking for a quick fix so I could drive it home after I bought it.
Ok, the car is an '84 Z28. I have the wire running directly from the positive battery post to the alternator, then from the 2 prong plug coming off the alternator the larger of the 2 wires goes back to the alternator and connects where the battery cable does. From the wiring diagram I studied this looks to be right.
My question is about 3 wires coming from the harness near the alternator. There were 3 wires, 2 approx. 10-12 gauge wires and one much smaller wire, all of which were cut and about 1/2 in of wire was exposed. You see one wire in the pic that starts out black and is spliced into a red wire that goes to the alternator on the same connection as the battery cable, I dont think this is the right place, but the car didnt have any power at all until I connected this wire here. The other larger wire which you can see in the pic just above the oil fill cap is still not hooked to anything. the smaller of the 2 wires coming from the alternator plug is spliced into the smaller of the wires coming from the harness. The car runs right now, but I know its not hooked up right. Could someone point me in the right direction as to where the wires coming from the harness go?
Thanks

Re: Alternator Wiring Help
The small plug-in on the altenator, one goes to the battery terminal on the back of the altenator and the other one should have 12volts ignition feed or 12volts while running. I beleive the 12volt feed comes from the GAUGE fuse if I remember right.

the connecters on the alternator are 2 trigger wires and i think a constant hot not quite sure i know one of them goes to the fuse box like john said but i dont think it was a gauge fuse do u have a wiring diagram of the chargin circuit?

Re: Alternator Wiring Help
I think i have the same problem, i have one wire that I can't seem to see where it goes. the battery is hooked up to the back, I plug in the the little plug which has 2 wires. one heads to the back of the engine and the other is just hanging out. I read through all the replies and not quit sure where it all leads to.
did you ever figure this out?

Re: Alternator Wiring Help
I did think it was a ground at first, but it is red and it doesn't reach anything to ground to. If i need to I'll just get it to a shop and let them figure it out. The thing that bugs me is that I know its simple and I just can't see it.
I beginning to think that I bought someone else's botched project.
I still have high hopes. little by little I'll get back the way its supposed to be.

I guess i could put a volt meter on it, that will tell me if theres juice or not.

Re: Alternator Wiring Help
It was my inderstanding that the red wire went to the large terminal on the starter solenoid. I just got my car running and that's where I ran it. The car runs fine although I can't say how well the battery is being charged. I would like some more knowledgeable input too.
