82 Z28 Battery Drain
Okay I have here an 82 z28 the wiring has been hacked at, and the previous owner said that the high beams are causing the drain so he unplugged them, well im still getting a bad drain, i will fully charge the battery and it might last a week, the alt is good and the battery is good, the car also has an electronic fan wired to a switch, it has a cheap aftermarket tach, the speedo is way off the kph is closer to the actual mph, factory tach is bad, factory watertemp is bad. If you have any solutions or helpful tips on where to look I would appreciate it, oh and by the way when the ingnition is off the battery doesnt spark when touched to the positive lead if this helps at all, so its either and extremely low drain, or something else.

Well, for starters you can check loads across the fuses with the car off. Get a multi-meter, remove one fuse at a time, and check current draw across each one. I had this problem in my 95 C1500, turned out something in the stock radio was drawing too much current with the ignition off. The radio wiring had never been touched, so I know it was just a faulty radio.

you can check draw with a DVOM. disconnect the battery pos or neg and hook the DVOM inline with one of the cables. you need .5amps or less. if you have more its easier to disconnect each fuse or suspected part until draw is gone.

you can do the same thing with a test light or any 12v light bulb. just wire the bulb in place of the dvom. if the light comes on , you have a draw, but it can't tell you how much. a dvom can be expensive. over $100.

I had the same problem on my old 84 z28 the ignition wire on the starter had rubbed on the block and drained the battery over time try checking that, its rare that it happens but it does.

Re: 82 Z28 Battery Drain
You can do the same thing with an analog VOM. Remember to pull the fuses for anything that has a constant current draw. i.e. radio, ECM, dome light if the door is open...... Another trick is to open your hood and touch the hood light right away. If it burns your fingers it's not shutting off when you close your hood.
Bad door jamb switches are often the culprit but they tend to give intermittent problems.
On the other end of the spectrum are electronics that are coming out of standby mode for whatever reason. i.e. radios, ECM's.
As you pull your fuses you might not want to stick them right back in. if a harness is damaged you could have draw on more than one circuit. Good Luck.
