This year uses three different relays to operate the headlights:
(One) Isolation Relay #10022620 (I found this in between the radiator and battery)
(Two) Headlight Actuator Relays #10031246 (I found one on the LH fender near headlight and the other on the RH fender near headlight and battery.)
All of these relays have “HR” on the top and 10031246 cannot replace 10022620.
GM dealers show that 10022620 relays are discontinued and 10031018 relays are a replacement for all the relays. As far as I can tell, 10031018 is a replacement for 10031246 Actuator Relay, but cannot be used for the 10022620 isolation relay. I do not believe there is a replacement made for 10022620 and I notified GM about this possibly being wrong in their parts catalog. GM sells 10031018 for $50 and I did not want to spend the money to find out.
Car Quest sells a replacement for 10031246 for around $22. The part number is 56-1793. The only replacement 10022620 I could find is on other Firebirds and Fieros around the same years. Just look for the 10022620.
How to test circuits: Go to You Tube, search “fiero gen 1 headlight motor circuit test 1of2”. Buddy Craig has two great videos on how to do this using a testlight and manually crossing wires to figure out what is and is not working.
How to rebuild the headlight motors: Go to You Tube, search “Rebuild of Fiero Gen 1 headlight motor”. There are seven videos by Buddy Craig, who does a great job on how to rebuild the motors.
Firebird Headlight Rebuild Parts: Check out www.rodneydickman.com/retail.html. Rodney specializes in Fieros, but also does the Firebirds. Most motors seem to have just the one plastic gear that strip, but mine had two plastic gears. The Intermediate gear was plastic in my headlight motor and the one that was broken. Rodney hooked me up with a metal one and provides complete instructions on how to perform the rebuild.
Here’s the numbers off my motors in case it is helpful:
Passenger headlight motor (not going up, but will go down. Has plastic intermediate gear): # 5048?01 Delco Products 224 5 17 11
yeah i went through the same crap going back and forth with my local GM dealer to find out the same info on the part numbers. Nobody makes this relay aftermarket at all, looked everywhere. The problem is the actuator relays are used for a ton of other applications that's why they still make them. The isolation relay configuration as no use for anything else so they stopped making them. Sucks, had to call a scrapyard. Really thinking about buying up all the used isolation relays i can find, then i can charge whatever i want for them.
1986 Trans Am Headlight/Isolation Relay Information
bwd makes Isolation Relay to the headlights, see link below. It is not name Isolation relay.
BWD RELAY R6433 cost 72.99. expensive but its a direct fit.
So years later I am in the need for the Isolation relay. I imagine I'm not alone. It appears there is no option from the my local Gm dealership, Advanced Auto or anywhere on the internet for the GM 10022620 or BWD R6433. Does anyone have any options?
So these would all be actuator relays?
Or is the RY130 the isolation relay?
RY130 relay is the motor relays and not the isolation relay. P/n 10022620 is the isolation relay but good look finding one or a replacement. I built a isolation relay (DPDT) and haven't had any trouble yet i wish you luck.
The thing that bothers me about this is the specs say MAXIMUM ON TIME = 15 minutes.
Can someone post the schematic of the isolation relay? I want to figure this out.
I assume that 12vdc gets applied in 1 direction to raise the headlights, and then gets reversed
to lower them???

Without looking at the wiring schematic in the service manual, I can't say for sure. But it looks similar. It could be cheaper. Has anyone tried Rodney Dickman's set up?

It is a DPDT relay but not any one will work. I work in aviation and was able to figure out how to make one. Check this site out, he has made one that just splices in. rodneydickman.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=47&products_id=422. It's $36.95. I haven't used his and know nothing about him, but I hope it works. Nearly impossible tongind one. Good luck

Also, do you have any used ones that don't work? They can usually be fixed.

This is a schematic of the headlight system. Isolation relay is marked
I'm going to have to investigate this more.
But it seems that Rodney Dickman (tell me he didn't get picked on in school with that name) has already solved the problem.

Not sure but I like to stay as stock as possible! Good luck.
If you've tried this one, does it work? I've been trying to find one for a few months now, and I've made the mistake of trying 3 of the actuator relays on accident.

not only is it the exact relay for our cars it also comes with the mounting bracket attached, and yes it did fix my problems
