87 Trans am no spark at coil

Hi Thanks in advance for taking time out to reply to this thread. I have an 87 TPI Trans Am. It was sitting in my garage over the winter. I just tried to start it yesterday and I wasnt getting spark from the coil. I did all the checks to see if theres a wire loose. took a spoark plug out, no spark. Did the whole screw driver test in the coil wire still no spark. So I assumed it might be a bad coil. Got a brand new one swapped it out and still same thing. I know its getting power from the egnition so What else could I check? Should I get a new cap and wires? Would a bad cap not make the coil have power? Shouldnt the coil have power even if the cap or rotor button is bad? Is there something else I can check to see if it may be the problem that anyone else knows about? I dont know a whole alot about it and I have done what I know already so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Good advice from avilla20 however if you want to save time from the round trip to the parts store, grab a side marker bulb.

Connect one lead to the coil primary
(the ignition module side not the key side) and the other lead to ground.

Crank the engine.

Does the test light flash while cranking?

If it does the module is good.

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

O.k. opened up distributer and module looked a little corroded. Took it to autozone and they tested it. It was good so maybe it was the corrosion
I will check it out tonight after I get off work and clean up the module. Will let ya know the results

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

Well back to square 1 still no spark from the coil. Anything else it can be? Is there a crank sensor or something maybe I can check? The coil has 4 wires that go to it. 1 plug has 2 (1 pink and 1 white or grey) I think the fatter pink one is the ignition the white one I think might be to the tach. The other plug goes to the module it has 2 wires as well. then there is another plug that goes to the module not sure where those go to though. Anyone can think of another possiblity as to why the coil isnt firing?

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

Well gonna spend all day tomorrow on trying to figure it out. Kinda hard to see whats goin on back there since its so close to the firewall. Gonna take the hood off and move heater hoses out of the way to see if I can get a better view and go from there. Hopefully I can figure why I aint getting the spark from the coil.

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

O.K. well put in a new coil, new module, new cap and rotor and still no spark. I found out that there is another part I can try. There is a pick up coil inside the distributor. Problem is to change it do I have to take out the distributor? If so does anyone have any links to a guide or a walkthrough on that whole process? Also if the pickup coil wasnt working would that prevent the coil from having spark?

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

O.K. well got a remanufactured Distributor from autozone for 100 bucs. I thought it might have just been the easiest route instead of pulling the old one taking it to a shop to have the distributor takin apart just to replace the pickup coil. Sad part is the new Distributor came with a new module and I had previously purchased a new one and I am pretty sure they dont take back electronic parts for refunds. Oh well got a spare one I guess lol.

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

Alright put the new distributor in and it was the pick up coil. She starts right up now. I am sure theres ways of testing all the things I replaced to see which part was the bad one before you actually change it. Well I hope this post might help one of you other people out there having the same problems.

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

You changed the pick up on the bottom of the distributor shaft? You have to take the distributor all the way out. I just bought a new distributor because in order to change that pick up the gear at nottom has to be takin off

Not sure what that could be then. Bad ground or ignition wire maybe?

Thats Y a factory service manual is the best thing for you to own. It will save you tons of money, teach you the proper way to work on stuff and you wont be called a parts changer..

Using a voltmeter or test light (the type for testing for voltage, not a continuity tester) probe the primary of the coil when the key is in the RUN position.

Is there power?

The reading will be whatever the battery voltage is.

That is what is meant by “power”.

It should be approximately 12 volts.

Re: 87 Trans am no spark at coil

[QUOTE=Slayze;5283632] okay sounds I have an 88 trans am and I am also getting no power to the coil so obviously no spark at the plugs. Should the coil fire even if the distributor is had since it gets power before the distributor to send it to it.
I’ve also already got a new coil, distributor cap, and icm on
