Re: Electronic shifter??

idk, i heard somewhere it may be the lockout for the tranny, and the one wire that lights up the reverse lights when im in reverse..would it hurt the tranny if i just unhooked these and hooked up a switch for the reverse lights?

Re: Electronic shifter??

Only 3 wires?

The transmission doesn't care about the shifter wiring in any case.

Re: Electronic shifter??

If you unplug it, the car won't start unless you tie the two larger wires together - the starter wiring runs through the neutral safety switch and won't allow the car to start unless you are in Park or Neutral.

yeah, there are 2 large wires, probably purple and yellow, they are the neutral safty, they have to be together for the car to start. the other wire im unsure of, could be for backup lights. the later model cars have 6? wires on the shifter.

Re: Electronic shifter??

The others are for the reverse lights and a P-N signal for the ECM.

Re: Electronic shifter??

One of the 4 will enables the rear hatch switch so you can't pop the rear hatch while driving.

Re: Electronic shifter??

Doesn't the new shifter have provisions for the wiring? Maybe you bought a used part that is missing something? I'd check with the shifter manufacturer.

If you tie the two large wires together, it will bypass the neutral safety switch for the starting circuit, but then the car can be started in any gear (a safety issue since it could start in drive and run over someone, hit a parked car, etc.)

• Large purple and yellow wires are the Neutral Safety Switch wires.

• Small blue and green wires are for the reverse lights.

• Small orange and black wires are the torque converter lock-up wires when the engine is idling. This changes the idle RPM. You can leave these disconnected if you want.
