Tach Problem?

Hello, Im new to this site and I just bought a 1991 Camaro RS that someone swapped a sbc 350 TBI into for $700 bucks. I am have a couple of problems but I would like to fix this first. The problem is that when I go to start my car the tach starts 7000rpm then hangs around 3000 when its trying to start, then after it starts the tach goes maxed out and never moves anymore. What should I check first. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Chris

Re: Tach Problem?

was the car a V6 before? could have the wrong tach. Common problem with tach is the resistor network in the tach goes nutty this could also be your problem. First thing is i would have your cluster fixed/checked.

Get a multimeter, pull the gauge cluster out, remove the clear plastic lens and gauge face surround from the cluster, and follow the instructions in the link above. The resistors in the tachometer circuit board go bad causing the exact problem you just described.

whether the engine was a 305, 307, 327, 350, or 383, the tach will always read the same. The tach signal is produced in the dizzy. The issue may be in the tach circuitry board. Ill post the link for you.
