Starting issue (Starter not turning)

Hey guys,

Sorry if this has already been talked about recently but I'm currently stumped. I have a 92 RS 305 TBI 5 speed that is not starting. The car is not turning over(the starter is not spinning).

The car push starts fine and the fuel pump is humming in the on position but when I go to crank it it does not spin over. SO since I can push start it, I know im not having an issue with VATS. Right?

I tried jumping the neutral safety switch with some wire but that didnt help. I tested continuity on the neutral/clutch safety switch and its fine. Today, I hooked up my multimeter to the safety switch wire and got voltage. I also just changed the starter relay. Since I am getting power to the safety switch does that mean my ignition is working? (The switch/cylinder). I am thinking the starter is bad right now but cant get under the car right now to test the voltage and jump the solenoid.

Just want to clear some things up. Thanks in advance

Re: Starting issue (Starter not turning)

Starter will have a purple wire to it, on a terminal all on it's own. Grab a 10gauge wire, and put 12v+ directly from battery to where that purple wire connects - if the starter spins it's good. Then trace back to the NSS, relay, and ignition switch.

Here's a troubleshoot guide: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=38

Wiring diags: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19
Lots of 92 diags at bottom of that page as well - great stuff there!

Re: Starting issue (Starter not turning)

Ok, so I jumped the solenoid (purple terminal) from the battery and nothing. I didnt have the keys in the ignition though..would vats prevent the starter from turning?

Re: Starting issue (Starter not turning)

sounds like it's time for a new starter, jumping it should at least cause a click. Give it a nice smack with a hammer if you haven't tried already.

Tried the hammer.. looks like its the starter, at least its an easy job. Hopefully this fixes it!

You HAVE to have the key on! Sorry, I neglected to mention that. So, retest with key on.

You don't have to have the key on to test it. Putting 12 volts to the terminal where the purple wire connects will push the pinion out and turn the engine over. The car won't start without the key being on but it will crank if the starter is good.
