Hey smart people. Tell me why it wouldn't be a good idea to have an alternator pigtail that has a lower gauge wire size than the 2 factory wires that are in my harness (the brown and red one).

Wouldn't I still be ok? I'm thinking that if the wire is just bigger it's not going to be the weak link in the chain. Like a reversed fusible link lol.

 

Water flows through a big pipe easier than a small pipe, same with electrons.

 

I understand that but the number of electrons flowing should be the same even if bigger wire is used, right?

I just want to know if the red and brown wires that go to my alternator will get damaged if the pigtail I bought that goes to the alternator has a thicker gauge of wire.

 

Your not going to damage the alternator, but what are you hooking up, and why wouldn't you want to go to the battery?

 

I'm just trying to replace the connector that goes to my alternator because It's smashed up. The new connector I got has thicker wire than the old one.

 

Then no, that won't hurt anything, in fact, it will be better. Just a note, solder joint with heat shrink is the best connection.

 

when in doubt you can go bigger, just not smaller. No problems with using that pigtail. Red rock is right

I have a CS144 that puts out around 260 or so and I moved my battery to the trunk. I have an electrical block on the passenger fender and I ran car audio wire #4 from the alt lug to the block with a copper lug at the alt. It works off of surface area and the good audio wire has thousands of small copper strands that works perfectly. If a wire is getting warm then go bigger and use better wire. I ran 2 ought back to the battery. I can jump the car from the front or back. All of the car audio stuff is very high quality.
