vats issue??
My 91 bird randomly about once every 2 weeks won't turn over. The security light is on when It does this. I did the resistor trick but it still randomly does it. Someone help me.

Re: vats issue??
Maybe the VATS Module is going out? The resistor bypass only works if the VATS Module is good. If the Module is going out, gonna hafta reprogram the PROM.

Re: vats issue??
Is that under kick panel and would the security light be on because of this?

Re: vats issue??
It seems like everyone else with a vats issue has no security light. Mine shuts off like it should usually then randomly stays on and never goes off and no start.

Re: vats issue??
security light wont come on if its just the relay. the light only comes on if the module senses the wrong resistance from the key (which since you have the column bypassed it shouldnt). sounds like your bypass may be faulty, or the module is going out. if its the module, its either reprogram the VATS out of the computer, or buy a VATS bypass box.
when you did the resistor bypass, you unhooked the column wire from the VATS system right?

Re: vats issue??
if it was a bad bypass why would it need to sit for an hour before it will fire

Re: vats issue??
Vats has a feature that requires no key in the ignition for 5-15 min after it reads the wrong resistance as a "reset" period. Like i said. It could be a faulty bypass or the module just dying.

Re: vats issue??
the VATS bypass box? its wired directly to the ecm on the same wire the VATS module is and generates the same signal as the functioning module. so as far as the ecm is concerned, itll see it as if the VATS module is ALWAYS saying the key is good and the car can start. it bypasses all of the VATS system except the programming in the ecm itself.

Re: vats issue??
me personally no. i got rid of my computer a while ago. im sure theres a few people on here that use them. theyre simple to hook up. its just a switched 12v souce, a ground, and the signal out that you wire into the VATS signal wire on the ecm harness.
the VATS module outputs a specific sine wave(or square wave i cant remember exactly) at i think 60HZ when it senses the correct resistance value from the column. the bypass box generates that same signal anytime it has power (thats why its wired to a switched power source and not a constant).
