Wiper delay still not working :( help
Hey guys,I got an odd issue that i thought shouldve been an easy fix.During my ls1 swap I accidentally forgot to remove the wiper motor when yanking out my 383 and the driverside head had hit the wiper motor cover and exploded into billions of pieces(quite the show lol) I thought meh..whatever..replace the cover and washer pump and all should be good, the connectors and wires were not damaged and it all worked fine before my motor swap.I was able to find a used wiper motor complete with the cover from a mint 87 gta since on the firebirds I was told this yr used a certain motor/cover?Before I changed wiper motors all I could do was use hi/low wipers and use my wipers even with the car off? After switching the motors out I still do not have wiper delay, the wipers still can be used with the car off,and I need a new washer pump I think..the washer pump makes noise but nothing squirts out(reminds me of my ex gf lol) Anyways..i noticed that if i try using the delay, the wipers atleast come up past the hoodline but thats it..never intermittently wipes. How can I test to see if either I got a faulty wiper switch..or the delay cover on the wiper is bad? Does anyone make replacements instead that I can buy and call it done? Thanks for any help

Re: Wiper delay still not working :( help
If I'm simply looking at an 84-87 DELAY Wiper Motor next to an 84-87 Non-Delay Wiper Motor,.......... I could not tell you which one was which.
This is what happens when a non-delay motor is installed on a car wired for delay......... Unless you saw the replacement "delay" wiper motor working & IN ACTION with your own eyes: do NOT believe that it's a delay motor. You might pull it from a car that has a delay stalk on the cloumn; but that doesn't mean that it's previous owner didn't swap the wrong one on there before scrapping the car. ( after 20 years - anything is possible ! )
Could be ! If the original system was working normally before the original wiper motor/cover was smashed than you can "ASSUME" that the column stalk, column wiring, Dash/Engine wiring are still OK. My first step would be another PROVEN delay Wiper motor.........
if i try using the delay, the wipers atleast come up past the hoodline but thats it..never intermittently wipes
or the delay cover on the wiper is bad?

Re: Wiper delay still not working :( help
Well a non delay motor and a delay motor are very different in appearance and wiring plugs so no confusion about it being a delay wiper motor for the 87 transams were a 1yr specific wiper motor from all the research Ive found.I want to narrow down if maybe I somehow damaged the wiring and I can test it to be sure..or the delay cover is faulty even on the replacement I got.

Re: Wiper delay still not working :( help
The wiper covers are different not the motor itself(most ppl just call it the wiper motor since you can buy the cover seperately).I found this on other threads in here before of ppl posting the differences in wiper motor/covers between different years and those with built-in pumps and those with pumps in the washer tank. The harness plugs differ aswell. There are quite a few part numbers when I was searching for wipers on 3rdgens from 82-85,86-87,88-92.If I can find pics of them again Id post it.Regardless..this isnt helping me fix my wipers lol.

87 cover with delay
88-92 cover non delay
88-92 with delay
Couldnt find a pic of the earlier 82-85 wiper motor/cover.Most 85+ cars had delay wipers..some were just hi/low.

Well a non delay motor and a delay motor are very different in appearance and wiring plugs.
The wiper covers are different not the motor itself
An 84-87 non-delay and a 84-87 delay motor will connect directly into the same (84-87) plug. Some Firebirds used a short intermediate wiring harness that plugged in between the engine harness and the wiper motor.... This is due to a different harnesses, not different motors. ( left plug = wiper motor and right plug = Bird engine harness. )

ThirdGen Wiper motors are:
82-83 ( same as late second gen )
84-86 Berlinetta ( digital control )
84-87 ( washer pump in motor cover )
88-92 ( no washer pump )
* I've never seen a factory installed Digital GTA wiper motor. This could be "special" wiper motor,... similar to Berlinettas Wiper Motor perhaps !?
If you know enough to look inside the wiper cover to verify what circuit board is inside; ( not everyone would know enough ) you shouldn't have a problem diagnosing the system & get your wipers going again !
P.S. Just in case; If your playing with covers,....... be sure to set the Motor in Park and align the Cam properly before installing the cover or the plastic cam will snap (& ruin the cover) the first time the wiper is tuned on.

Post#6 clearly shows there are different covers..took me awhile to find this but I knew it was true.Like I said..some wiper motors came with different covers even in the same yrs.87 being a 1 year only part.To be clear my issue is not the motor plug/harness..the motor works on hi/low...the cover for the delay is my issue and there are more than one cover and more than one board.I need a proper diagram for the 87 so I cant atleast test the wires before I risk taking the cover off and breaking the blue gear on the cover putting it back together.

Re: Wiper delay still not working :( help
I guess there's book-smart and street-smart. Different part number for the 87 only ?? OK - Don't matter.
The Wiper motor in the 87 IROC I parted last summer was a DIRECT swap into the 87 Trans AM I rebuilt (both delay cars). I recently had to get someone a wiper motor for his 87 LT(? )and tested about 8 of them on my 85Z28 before finding 1 that was "delay". The EXACT same style wiper motor is currently installed on my 86 IROC, but that car has no delay.
These should help you get past your Wiper Problems ! Thes are from the 87 CAMARO shop manual. I didn't have 87 Firebird manual but I did have 86 Firebird and it's exactly the same as whats show here. ( but the 87 Camaro digrams are color coded ! )

Re: Wiper delay still not working :( help
Thanks anyway..I got in contact with a friend who can remake the circuit board with better quality parts after taking my cover off and had him look at it.He said its easy to take a non delay motor and make a small circuit to turn it into delay wipers aswell and adding a small **** on the dash if I had a non delay stalk.
Now I need a new washer pump..this one dry rotted inside..makes alot of noise but doesnt pump.
